[ HORTIGlLTUREl [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 23 February 1907

[ HORTIGlLTUREl WEST VIRGINIA HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY . The 14 th annual meeting of the W . Va . State Horticultural Society was held in Charleston , January 17 , 18 and ID . We had hoped-for a full attendance , and from the number of inquiries for cards giving reduced railroad rates our expectations would have been realized had it not been for the flood in both the Kanawha and the Ohio rivers , which shut many of our people out . The weather was also unfavorable as it rained day and night for a week , and continued very warm . Not landing all this we held the best three days meeting in the history of the society . The president , Hon . Alex . Clohan of Martinsburg , delivered an address which was full of encouragement both to the small orchardist and to the large stock companies that are planting so extensively in the state . He laid special stress on quality of fruit , neatness and honesty of packago . He spoke kindly of the exhibit made at St . Louis , and the good resulting from i...

CURRENT COMMENT . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 23 February 1907

CURRENT COMMENT . A great many AGRICULTURE IN Peru- people seem to LIG SCHOOLS . think that the teaching of agriculture in the public schools would necessitate a revolution in the courses and possibly force the discontinuance of some of the standard subjects that go to make up a liberal public school education . That would not be the case , however , if the ideas of the most-advanced and broadest-minded promoters of the new idea are carried out . The idea is not to make a great change in the course of study , nor to introduce new studies to any great extent . It is possible , however , to give the old studies a new turn ; to make them apply more directly to ev-ery-day , practical affairs , and to make the studies that have always been considered standard , actually more interesting , more practical and more valuable to the pupils . For instance , II the school readers contain selections of an agricultural or natural science spirit , the pupil is bound to absorb this spirit from them...

OHIO TAX REFORM . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 23 February 1907

OHIO TAX REFORM . A movement for tax reform (?) seems to be the order of the day , and I notice by a local paper , probably a paid advertisement , that farmers all over the state are writing to AttorneyGenerall Ellis asking for a change in the law so as to place all the taxes on real estate . Now I hardly think that any farmer , unless it is one whose interests are larger than those of the farm , desires this . But unless they do something to stay the tide laws will be passed that will increase our already heavy burden of taxation . Let us consider some of the effects of exempting personal property from taxation . Suppose two neighbors ; one has a farm valued at $ 1 , 000 , the other has notes to the value of ? 1 , 000 . Each one yields 6 percent on the investment , and if they lived in the township with the writer their taxes would be slightly in excess of if , ana the net income of each would be about 4 # . If the tax on money is removed the net income on it would be 6 jC , while ...
