AGRICULTURAL [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 30 May 1868

AGRICULTURAL The Cultivation of Potatoes . A well-managed potato crop generally pays the firmer better than any other root crop , as it meets a ready sale and does not rob the soil . entirely of those ingredients which are necessary for the sustenance , of other crops . The principal inorganic Ingredient of potatoes appears to be potash , a fact which clearly points out the Importance of wood-ashes as a manure for this crop . The ashes of plants are iti weight very light when compared with the unbnrnt plants ; 1 , 000 : parts of wheat contain only70 of ash ; potatoes give but 45 parts ln 1 , 000 . B y carefully observing the composition of tbe ashes of plants , we can ascertain the food or manure which they require . On this subject LIEBIG says : — It ls certain tbat the mineral substances famished by the soil and found again in the ashes of plants are their true food , and these are the conditions of vegetable life .
