UNKNOWN [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 August 1910

Public Sales . Nashville , Tenh . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . It is certainly very pleasing to see some of our big breeding farms establishing public sales on their premises or in the town where their farms are located . It gives buyers a chance to see how these big farms are conducted , thereby making a visit educational and at the same time gives parties in search of stuff an opportunity to attend a sale . Public sales , rightly conducted , are the best regulators of prioe . The value placed upon an animal by a ring side full of judges and buyers is the best indication that the prices there established are correct and near true values . When one begins to speak of public sales it makes one weary to think of how some of them have been conducted in the past . They have been a hurrah-by bidding-reserve bid-never-change-hand-kind of affair . At the end of one of these sales there is a hurry to see the average and get it in the papers . Half of the animals never leave the...

HEART TO HEART TALKS For the Benefit of Our Advertisers About putting prices in an Advertisement This column is going to he devoted to one single purpose , and that is to try and find where the advertisements that appear in this paper can be strengthened , and made to bring better results for our advertisers as well as ourselves . It ! s going to be a heart to heart affair . We will call a spade a spade and we are going to get at the bottom of some of the things that bother all of us . Now , do you believe in putting a price on your stock—or whatever you may be advertising—in your advertisement ? Are you more likely to answer an advertisement that has a price quoted on the thing that is advertised ,, or do the ones that have no information about prices attract you more ? To make this plain , suppose we take a sample advertisement that we all see in a hundred different forms . Suppose the No-mention Price farm have some gilts and a good young herd boar for sale . They write an advert...

ALONG A NEW RAILROAD IN A NEW AGRICULTURAL REGION [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 August 1910

ALONG A NEW RAILROAD IN A NEW AGRICULTURAL REGION A NEW TOWN The New Town Here is a town , Alpha , Alabama , founded under the most encouraging conditions and in the very midst of thousands of acres of the finest farming lands that America can boast of . It does not open up with the burning of red fire or the booming of cannon , but is modestly established as the natural outcome of a growing and thriving community . Many things are in its favor . It is the first town to be actually established on the Washington & Choctaw Railroad , which line taps a productive expanse of smiling country hitherto unapproachable because of the lack of railroad facilities . It is seven miles from the nearest town ( Yellow Pine ) and -will have no competition from that source , because Yellow Pine is dominated by lumber interests that will never encourage its upbuilding . Indeed , conditions in favor of a new town could hardly be more auspicious . The climate is delightful , health condition...
