£0$ Irttgett* luvatd. CITY AND COUNTY OFFICIALJ>APER. FRIDAY JULY 3, 1874. Railroad Progress. In an article published some days ago, the Herald alluded to the fact that in order to meet the requirements of their charter, the Southern Pacific Railroad Company need only build twenty miles of road each year, and we remarked that they could secure their land grants and yet consume eight yean in completing the road to this city. We said it was possible the company would build the road in a much shorter time, but the probabil ity of their doing it under the disad vantages which the constant warfare of a number of our leading journals nnd many prominent politicians com pelled them to labor, rendered it al most certain that for several veto--to come the roatl would not be construct ed more rapidly than absolutely nec essary to meet the requirements of the charter. A correspondent of the Star takes a different view ofthe situation, and argues that in order to secure the subsidy voted by L...

; i>c. Refill CiTY AND COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPER. TUESDAY JULY 7, 1874. A Standard of Time for Los Angeles. The urgent necessity for some reli able standard of time which would I c available to the general public must be apparent to every resident of this city. A person in the pursuit of cor rect time finds as much difficulty in obtaining it ns Ihe famous philosopher did when he searched the streets of an nneient city with a lantern for an honest man. The earnest inquirer after correct time will most assuredly consult the town clock first, which is either Aye minutes fast or live minutes slow', and more likely to be stopped. In his despair he will fly to the jew elers, but the ostentatit m .-Undards of time in all the leading establish ments wili be found to vary from one to five minutes from each other. And now the question arises how can this chaotic state of affairs iv our standards of time be remedied. Is there no such thing as true time for the meridian of Los Angtles, or is it ...
