The frnnwrs of the Constitu tion mndo a grtfftt mistake when they did not incorporate in it a provision rendering the President of the United States ineligible for re-election. Gen ml Washington sought to do it in practice, and to retire at the end of LU first term, thus establishing n precedent that would have been second only to constitutional authority. In an unlucky moment he was per suaded to he overruled. Gen eral Jackson saw the mistake with his usual clearness, and every oue of his eight annual messages was in favor of amend ing the Constitution so that the President conld hold but for one term, that to be extended, however, for six years.
