21 & ife ^ # Southwest Chinese Journal DECEMBER 1980 REFLECTIONS by William Der Bing This is the second in a series of SPINOFFS from America's Space Program. In a country as large as China, only about ten percent or so of its land is productive. Yet, China has made tremendous strides in trying for agra- rian reform and to increase its crop yield to help feed the largest population in the world. One of the ways a Chinese American Company can assist is to look into utilization of NASA technology. Although some Asian Americans may have had government grants to study, none have used this technology to assist those who need it. Let's take the case of China. They have announced that they are in the planning stages of harnessing the Yangtze River for hydroelectric power. This power can be augmented by solar power. At the Johnson Space Center, in partnership with the U.S. Depart- ment of Energy, solar collector panels have been supply- ing approximately 23% of the electrical power to co...

23 ^ ill Southwest Chinese Journal DECEMBER 1980 THE MESSAGE Wim Sfl mW,f !$W£$wl mmm? By June Dove Leong Soon we will clebrate Christ- mas and for most it will be a happy time. Most will never experience the tragedies that are happening in this moment. Each month I am kept informed of the conditions in the suffering, hurting parts of the world. Today there are 500 million malnourished children in the world. An estimated 30 million chil- dren under five will die from hunger-related causes this year. An estimated 30 percent of all Africans and Asians suffer from malnutrition. In many poor countries nearly one out of three children will die before the age of five. Through World Vision International, I have sent monthly monetary gifts, but compared to the need, it is but a small trickle of life saving water in a staggering world, therefore I solicit your assistance in this endeavor. Many of you have read the "Triumph"..our Chinese Baptist Church's latest quarterly, which carries the st...

JANUARY 1981 $3 A) ^ ill Southwest Chinese Journal 14 CHRONOLOGY OF THE HISTORY OF THE CHINESE IN HOUSTON 1870 by Dr. Eduard C. M. Chen 'he first social event of the Chinese in the Houston area was the celebration of January 30, 1870, as New Year's Day at Bremond by the Chinese laborers on the iexas Central Railroad. It was described as foilows: "In full Chinese costume, including large um- brellas, they promenaded the streets 'to the delight of the juveniles without distinction of race or color.1" Every year since then, the Chinese have cele- brated this occasion, originally in private but later from 1933 to 1947 in Houston by the Wah Kew associa- tion, except for the war years. In 1947, the On Leong began sponsoring the celebration. In the early 1960's, they were open to the public and fireworks were set off and the Lion dance was performed. In the early 60's, the CPC picked a Miss Chinatown Houston and sent her to the national contest the next year. At present, the CACA selects a...

JANUARY 1981 A] ^ ill Southwest Chinese Journal 16 ~)7m THE MESSAGE By June Dove Leong Chemical warfare is an outrageous act. When discover- ery of its use is found in any part of the world..it shoud be brought to international attention. An article in Reader's Digest informed the general public that this atrocity is now be- ing applied in Laos to exterm- inate the Hmong people who dur- ing the Vietnam War fought in Laos in loyal support of America. Because of the fact that little publicity has been given to their valiant role to save American troops..nothing has been done to protect the Ilmong people against a retal- iatory communist revenge which is now taking place. t aw The Reader's Digest article advised that (1) a positive stance should be taken in our U.S. Senate and House..then an international forum should make this a major issue be- fore the U.N. (2) Financial and technological aid should be with- held from Hanoi to await an end to this inhuman genocide. (3) Since Vietnam ...
