localnews after the discussion. Martin said she was pleased that so many people turned out for the meeting. The room holds 75 people, and there were people stand- ing in the hallway listening to the discussion. "It was a very friendly meeting," Martin said. "We all remarked at the end that it was a pleasant meeting. People had a lot of ques- tions, and we answered them to the best of our ability." Martin said several people never had the chance to ask their questions because the event ended before they could be called on. "We will have to have more of these meet- ings in the future," Martin said. People in the audience asked about high crime rates in Oak Lawn, the possibility of crime moving from the entertainment district to residential areas and the possibility of installing cameras in the entertainment dis- trict. Some people objected to the idea of cam- eras being installed. "That's kind of a controversial topic with a lot of people* especially in the Cedar Springs entertainment...

ENDORSEMENT Continued from Page 6 him. Domingo Garcia, chairman of the Hispanic political group, said the endorsement stands because "everybody deserves a second chance." He noted Malin was never convicted of prostitu- tion. "We believe in redemption," Garcia said. "He said he has turned his life around, and that's quite a story." Malin has admitted to addiction problems he said he has recovered from. A religious conver- sion led to his decision to quit working in the sex industry, Malin said. Photos obtained by Dallas Voice from an archived website showed that Malin was work- Domingo Garcia ing as an escort as late as 2002. Bailey said he does not condemn Malin for having worked as a male escort, but said the candidate should have been "up front with us." "When someone is run- ning for public office^ they need to know they are going to come under a microscope of scrutiny," said Bailey, who added that he thought Tejano Democrats were making a mistake. "Tom knows a lot of people in the community. I am sure he has made some enemies, just like I have. Just like everyone has. I think it was some- one like that who did this," he added. Bailey said there is still the possibility that Malin could win the primary race. "His name is on the ballot. He could win. But it really doesn't matter," Bailey said. "Just by virtue of the way it was drawn, 108 is a Republican district. It is unwinnable for a Democrat. If it were winnable, Harryette Ehrhardt would still be in the Legislature. She would still be running for the office today." Ehrhardt retired from the House after Republicans redrew her district in 2001. Despite Bailey's prediction, Malin said he believes he can win the primary and defeat Republican incumbent Dan Branch in the gener- al election. "Whoever did this has done me a huge favor," Malin said on Tuesday. "This whole situation has opened up a dialogue about whether the Democratic Party can actually be a party of redemption and g...

Goff started Condoms to March of 1992, and donating to AIDS organizations has been a prior- ity for her from the beginning, she said. "I used to donate a percentage of our profits each year. by sponsoring our own performers who may not be part of an already-established group," Brines said. Rehearsals for Pride parade performers have already begin, according to Jose Reyes, who is director and choreographer. He said Pride Houston will provide the necessary cos- tumes and materials, including costumes for drag performers for a Brazilian "Copa Cabana"-themed performance. Dance routine rehearsals are held each Saturday and Sunday, and those interested in participating would need to attend most of the rehearsals, Reyes added. He said no experience is necessary and there are no age requirements, but participants need to be able to perform throughout the entire mile-long parade. Male, female, honorary and organizational grand marshals were chosen by a community vote. The party to announce the winners begins at 7 p.m. and will include complimen- tary hors d'ouevres and a cash bar. Utah senator amends ban on gay-straight allliances State attorney general said bill's original language would violate federal equal access laws; sponsor says measure necessary to stop 'recruitment' By Jennifer Dobner Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY — Back on Capitol Hill after 15 days in the hospital, Senator Chris Buttars has amended his bill against gay clubs. The amended bill was endorsed by the Senate Education Committee on a 4-2 vote Monday, and will now get a debate by the full Senate. Buttars, a Republican, adopted language in a similar House bill regarding the definition of human sexuality. Some said the original language would ban gay-straight alliance clubs from Utah's public high schools, but the Utah attorney general said it would run afoul of federal equal access laws. There is question now what Buttars' Senate Bill 97 would do, if anything. Some say the amended definition still could allow for the clubs to be banned, or at least force name changes, as state law bans an...

inalnews Continued from Page 26 School for Management and Urban Policy. "I'm trying to be very pragmatic, and when I talk to gay and lesbian people around the country, that's the key issue." State Senator Tom Duane, who is co-hosting the March 10 fundraiser, said Clinton was a "great friend" to the gay community despite her opposition to same-sex marriage. He cited her efforts to boost funding to fight crystal methamphetamine addiction among gays, and her recent votes against confirming Justices John Roberts and Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court. Duane added that he is hopeful the senator would eventually shift her views on same-sex marriage. "I would like her to support our right to get married, and I'm not giving up on the possibility of convincing her. "But I'm not going out of my way to alienate her, either," Duane said. The controversy comes as Clinton embarks on a multi-state fundraising swing for her re-election campaign. She spoke to supporters at a New York night- club...
