Special Sheep Sale. AT SHEPPARTON. J. McNamara and Co. report having held a special sale of sheep at Sheppartou on Friday, June 16th wheuovcr 14 000 sheep were yarded There was a good attendance of district buyers, but several Northern buyers, who were expected, did uot attend. The yarding was well up to the average for quality, the majority being made up of weauers and fcosd ewes, only a few lines of wethers belnu penned. The sale opened to good competition at Im proved prices, but as It progressed fluctuations were noticeable and sales were harder to effect, oxcept for ewes, which received more at tention than of late. A good demand rul ed for all well-grown parcels of qual ity, free, and in dry condition, ut firm late values. All other descrip tions were a little Irregular, with recent values difficult to obtain. Hides:— Comparatively smaller supplies to hand. The market dragged somewhat and it was diffi cult at times to sustain-last week's rates. Values for best conditioned compare favorably with lato rates, though any change favored buyers, but for sloppy and poor conditioned lots the market was fully id per lb. easier. Meeting at Berrigan. At a meeting of landholders held at Berrigan recently a resolution was carried expressing satisfaction at the Federal and Slate Govern ments commencing the work of water storage on the Murray for irrigation purposes. It was resolved to re-form the Murray River Main Canal League, and the following office-bearers were elected :—President, Mr H. J. Gorman ; vice-presidents, Messrs W. Pyle, E. M'Grady, K. O'Dwyer; secretary and treasurer, Mr JR.. Wardrop. The Murray Main Canal has been surveyed to pasB through Savern ake, Berrigan aud Finley. Some discussion took place at the meeting as to what value the land affected would be likely to be re sumed at. Eventually a resolution was carried that when the scheme is properly launched, the land ac tually required for irrigation be re sumed aud paid for at the value then existing. The Murray Waters Scheme. TURNING THE FIRST SOD AT TORRUMBARRY WEIR. Fifty miles down irom Echuca the course of the Mui ray takes a bend in the form of a great horse shoe. The length of the stream forming this bend is a mile,, and the strip of land caught in it is eleven chains wide. This is Hie site of the Torrutnbarry weir and lock now to be constructed by the Water Commission under the Mur ray Walets scheme, at a cost of about .£120,000 ; and last Satur day Mr Groom, Federal Minister of Works and Railways, turned the first sod, to mark the official start of the great undertaking. TOCUMWAL DEFEATS COREE The football season was opened on Saturday last when Tocumwal was at home to Coree, and Finley met the Eerrigau team 011 the former ground; At Tocumwal a fair number of enthusiasts weie attacted to t'e playing nrem', which was in good order. A late start was m ule but the game was completed in daylight. Jack Powell captained the locals a id Jones the visitors, whose appear ance 011 the field without uniforms drew much unfavorable comment. The vistors had the advantage of a slight breeze in the opening quarter, but play generally was congested and scoring was light.
