Ti E EA.dY f E OFi AN ACTOR'S LIFE. -o "About three years ego" remarked Mr. August us Leach, the wel!-known, Victorian ,tor to a reporter from this journal, " I was travelling with Ivy I-ayman's Dramnttic Co. through Q ieensland, and whilst touring in the hback blocks endured many hardships. For instance, we were obliged to live almost entirely on neat, as vegetables could not be had for love or money. This style of living caused my blood to become disordered. My head began to ache arid I grew quite feverish. The pains extended down my back and all over my body ; my skin became affected and sores broke out on my hands. My eyes were a dingy yellow and leaden looking with black niarks under them. My hands, arms, and body became one mass of large sores, and the sight of food made me sick. Isought medi cal advice, and cooling medicines were prescribed for ron, which I took for some time but did not seem to obtain benefit. Then I tried patent medicines but found them useless. One day I r...

TOOLANGI. October 2. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 5 October 1900

TOOLANGI. (From our own Correspondent.) October 2. At a meeting of the Yea River Railway League, held here on Saturday last, it was decided to ask the   Minister, through Mr. M'Kenzie, M.P., to include Healesville in the places to be suggested to the Standing Committee front which this line should commence. With that place to start from it is   considered that the department would strongly support the construction of a broad gauge line. An attempt is being made in Yea to float a company to start saw milling here on a large scale. Another mill site has been obtained by Mr. Crowley, who purposes working it in conjunction with the one he   has already going.

WHERE 390,000 WIVES ARE WANTED. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 12 October 1900

WHEIRE 310,000 XIV'ES ARE WANTED. Under the heading set above the following is beinr, printed aid reprinted in English and Indian papers: Three hundred thousand wives is un doubtedly a pretty large order, but it is one which our Australian colonies are particularly anxious for the mother country to fulfil. The demand for life partners in the Antipodes is much greater than the supply; and, unless the old country is prepared to go to the rescue, full 25 per cent. of the population of Australia will have to fret their lives away in the slate of single blessedness For, taking the Australian colonies in the aggregate, there are only 75 un married females for every 100 un married males. In New Sohth Wales alone, accord ing to the last census, there are nearly 100;000 :tbiore unmarried males than unmarried females. In Victoria the excess is upward of 73,000 ; in Queens land it is almost 57,000; in South Australia over 17,000 ; in West Aus tralia, 9000; in Tasmania about the same ; and in N...

THE ROYAL VISIT. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 12 October 1900

TIHE ROYAL VISIT. Sir Frederick Sargood writes as fol lows : TO TIHE EDITOR OF TIE GUARDIAN. Sir,-\Vhen passing through Canada in 1897 I was surprised and delighted to see the " Union Jack " (the emblem of the great British Empire) flying over all the Dominion state schools. Upon inquiry, I found that the regula tions of the education department pro vide for the hoisting and lowering of the flag each day by a " flag officer," and that the privilege of holding this position was keenly competed for by the boys. The result of my observa tion and inquires was upon my return mentioned by me to our minister of Education, MIr. A. J. Peacock, and i subsequently tohis successor, Mr. Carty 1 Salmon, but both Ministers, while warmly approving of the idea, were un able to take any practical steps conse quent uponrwant of funds; and -hence the matter had to remain in abeyance. t But it appears to me that the present is a very favorable time to revive the I subject, seeing that in q few months th...

CONCERT AND BALL. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 12 October 1900

CONCERT AND IALL. On Friday evening last, what was annonnced as a promenade concert and hall was held in the Recreation Hall, in aid of the funds for the proposed new public hall, and the need of a much larger building than at present exists was very much felt on the occasion in question. There was a good attend ance at the concert, but when the dancing commenced the hall was not big enough by half, and much of the enjoyment of a dance was lost by the cramped space at the disposal of the dancers. After Friday night's ex perience, lovers of the "light fantactic" will no doubt look forward with plea sure to the completion of much larger ha'l accommodation in Healesville. The following programme was creditably rendered :-Pianoforte duet, "Chil p6ric," Mrs. Alexander and Miss R. Phillips; song, "Cast Aside," Mr. Turner; graphophone selections by Mr. W. Phillips; duet, "Life's Dream is C'er," Mr. and- Mrs. Alexander; song, " Mona," Mr. Blanksby; song, " Lover and the Bird," Mrs. George; ...

DISPOSAL OF DRAINAGE [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 12 October 1900

DISPOSAL OF DRAINAGE r Now that the dranage of thetownship of Healesville is receviugattention from the local council, and the ratepayers, too,. appear anxious that something f should be done, we clip the following from Monday's " Age," being portion of a lecture by Mr. H. V. Champion, IL.C.E., in the Assembly Hall, Collins st., on above subject, and has reference to country towns. After dealing with the subject as affecting cities, and the various methods of disposal, the lecturer went on tosay :- 'In respect to insolated dwellings and institutions in the country and in the suburban districts not connected with any public drains, little or nothing had been attempted scientifically to dispose of their polluted waters. As a rule, the earth closet system was used, and liquid wastes were left to take care of themselves. In most isolated dwell ings a drain was cut to remove polluted water from the immediate precincts of the house, and the question of ultimate disposal was not considered...
