Does the Australian Accent Make You Shudder? [Newspaper Article] — Albury Banner Wodonga Express and Riverina Stock Journal — 31 January 1941

Does the Australian Accent Make You Shudder ? (By Dr. A. G-. Mitchell, Lecturer in English at Sydney University.) i IF you're ever stuck for an argument, bring- up the subject of Australian speech and you'll soon have one. It's a subject on which we Austra lians are peculiarly touchy. Not without reason, either when you think of the foolish and quite unj ustifiable ~ criticisms that are made of our speech. Australians have, beyond any shadow- of doubt, a characteristic way of speaking. . . But why be touchy or, diffident about it':1 Australian speech- is- good and natural for an Australian, American speech is good and natural lor an American. Why not Jet tlie 'matter rest there, rather than try to decide which form is the 'better and which tlie inferior? TX7E1. . associate some forms of siieech with lack of education and with vulgarity. We don 't like uneducated vulgarity, so we condemn the speech associated with it. Of course that -works both w.ays fins .111:111 afsociatos a certai...
