This Week's Cheep-up Items [Newspaper Article] — The Bunbury Herald and Blackwood Express — 4 October 1919

Tteii ^W|il*i Sfeiif-ip Ititfii Whenever we cull anything of a cheery nature : from our exchanges, we hasten $o pass tho item on to our readers, so here goes. On Tuesday last, so says the 'West Australian', the Hon Archibald Sanderson, M.L.C, gave notice of his intention to move tnartne government snouia appoint a Royal Commission to report upon the financial relationship between this State and the Common wealth. We don't know what the Hon. Archibald has in his head exactly, but, we do know this : — The Royal Commission, if appointed, will cost thousands of pounds of our good money, and not a bit of notice will be taken of its findings. An easier way is to throw the money in the sea and have done with it. Any howj we are quite 'bucked' to sjee a member of the Upper House taking himself seriously. Our accumulated deficit has reach ed ^3,772,676. That is what we are behind on our yearly housekeeping allowance, before starting to think about our debts Pearce is coming home.

The Peace Loan. WANTED SMALL CONTRIBUTORS. GOOD REASONS FOR ACTION. [Newspaper Article] — The Bunbury Herald and Blackwood Express — 4 October 1919

The tee feo, ? ? . . . . .-?»? ;? ?? ?? WANTED SMALL GONTRIBUT. ?r V ORS. : 'S6di- REASONS FOR ACTIONf . Almost ' countless requests wern made for an extension of the/period in which subscriptions could ,Ke made to the Peace Loan prior to the Federal Treasury decision to give more time, These requests as a . rule came from scattered countiy districts where the Committee had the utmost difficulty in canvassing, vast areas properly. Now that the extension has been given, it is devoutly to be hoped that good use will be made of it . The small contributor: . is wanted to assist swell the Loan, which by the way, is really a fund to assist Repatriation. Six good business reasons why the Loan should be over subscribed are; Because money can be borrowed from the Banks at four per cent, and the Peace Loan returns £5 6s per cent. Because that splendid interest return is free from State income tax. Because the security is tha best in the world (witness Mr Hughes' words, ' All who want a safe a...

Science Chats. THE CLOTHES' MOTH. Part II. [Newspaper Article] — The Bunbury Herald and Blackwood Express — 4 October 1919

Selsnoe Shafs. (By Arnold U. Henn.) ; Part II; ; There is a hole at the end, from which the head and foremost legs emerge, so that it can crawl and feed freely. The outer surface of the case consists of cut lengths oi the fibre on which it is living, and so is protect ive, inasmuch as it resembles its surrounding material and hides the minute ravager. It is. easy enough for it to add a bit to the case at the end from which its head protrudes ; and being very flexible, it can turn right round in the tube and put its head out at the other end and secrete a bit more there; cementing cut hairs to the outer surface. But in order to increase the breadth of the case, the grub has, from time to time, to undertake a really formidable operation. It slits up the case lengthwise for about half its extent, and fills in the gap with new material; then it cuts up the opposite face of the same half of the case and puts in a new patch there. And, after that, it has to treat the case in the same way ...
