You seldom see, or hardly find * (The words are not amiss) A man of my gigantic mind Write Boondabout like this. Chief Justice Lilley strongly condemns the prac tice adopted by m any storekeepers, and others, who place their goods in such exposed and tempting positions as to put the colony to the expense of keep ing the whole judicial staff, and the police officer, employed in protecting those who are so reckless. His Honor thought it would fee well if Judges refused to punish those who yielded to such strong temptation, and said he hadheard ofcases of jam being placed beside the gutter, in such a way as to induce "hungry children to pilfer." I concur in those remarks most heartily, and fancy that a tin of jam taken from " beside the gutter" by either a hungry, or a surfeited, child, might well be looked upon by that youngster as something found in t...

A Commonplace Bush Narrative. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro and Punch — 12 September 1885

A Commonplace Bush Narrative. j There is a certain ex-mail-contractor who is now manager of a northern station, of which he is part owner. Like Charles Boydell Dutton, he has de veloped a decided taste for aboriginals, ai'providing ajkind of labor which, though nasty, is cheap. ^ For some time after he assumed the managership of the station, he was the delighted proprietor (in a labor sense) of two blackfellows. One of these, who was a muscular and warlike fellow, appeared to he kept on hand as a convenient sort of bully, whose special duty it was to settle any disputes that arose between the manager and anyone else. | But this happy arrangement didn't last long. ; The two blackfellows were so well treated that tliey-bolted, leaving the station without its normal contingent of aboriginal labor. / . 3?or six weeks no blacks were seen. At the eiid of that period, some 200 niggers camped within a quarter of a mile of ~the station. The manager, and a couple of temporary guests, visited ...
