MELBOURNE. Friday, October 6. [Newspaper Article] — Portland Guardian — 10 October 1876

(rOOrf OUR OWN1 CoanuiiaronorN1.) Friday, October 6. The record of old times is ever interesting. History is the spur of jueulnlo intellects. To know hbow our frcefatlers fashioned themselves is to know ourselves, ".for; one blood beats in all." I could hot helli thlnk Ing this in perusing the record of the magistracy of the colony to-day. It has been said that our magistrates of til early dlyays were distinguished for a Dogierryash degree of crass-grtdncdness that many of thqm could not sign their names save with a cross, that, Sthey were of thie Iutllectual guild of tradlesmen noted for pettllogging views, for aBsence of legal knowledge, and incompetent, to comn prebend the legislation W*hiuh I; w'ah their mission to administer. THE SERVIAN WAR. LONDON, Sept. 29. [Newspaper Article] — Portland Guardian — 13 October 1876

THE SERVIAN WArl. Locoo\, Sept. 29. A deputation from the public meeting held at Guildhall to express indignation at the Turkish atrocities committed in Bulgaria waited upon Earl Derby to-day, urging the convocation of Parliament for the purpose of coesidering the British policy under such c.rcumstmnres. Earl Derby replied that instnrtlions had be-n.sent to Sir H._G. Ellit-, K.C.B., British Ambassador at CoustastinoFle, who had interviewed the Sultat on the subject, and had denounced the eothors of the atrocities, and demandel the immediate punishment of the perpstra. tors. It was needless to convoke ?ar liament, because peace negotiations were already proceeding smoothly. A Euri. pean war in consequence of the dis. reption in Turkey .was most un likely.
