A SPANISH TORPEDO DESTROYER DEFEATED. London, Wednesday. The latest news from 'Cuba is not reassur ing or encouraging, bo far as the Spaniards are concerned. A reliable report Btates that a Spanish cruiser and the torpedo boat destroyer Terror attacked the American auxiliary cruiser St. Paul at San Juan, on the north const of Porto Rico, a Spanish West Indian island. 75 miles cast of Havti. Despite the pluck and pertinacity of the Spaniards they were compelled to sheer off, Three times did the St. Paul strike the Terror with the shells from her powerful guns, killing an officer and two men. Thou the cruiser seeing that matters were practically hopeless and that the Terror was in a sinking condition, promptly towed the destroyer back into the harbor.

Consequent upon the determination by the United States Government to despatch a fljing equadron across the Atlantic, pre parations are being made in Spain to resist any possible attack on home ports.
