Miscellanea. A REAL BUNYIP.—A late number of the Goulburn Herald publishes the following discovery of the "great unknown" which has caused so intense a curiosity amongst the naturalists of this province :—We have received a letter from a most respectable credible party, living on the lower Mur- rumbidgee, which gives an account of the reappearance of this extraordinary animal. It appears that this gentleman was riding along the river on an early day this month, when he observed what appeared to be a huge log floating on the surface of the stream, but upon a nearer approach, and closer observation, he noticed that the ob- ject was making its way against the stream. THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. "Vox populi, vox Dei." SATURDAY, FEBRUARY, 10, 1849. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 10 February 1849

THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. " Vox populi, vox Dei." SATUJUOA^Ti^BEUARY^raiA WE would call the attention of His Ex cellency to a letter in our present number, complaining of an acknowledged and long standing grievance, under which the tra- ders and agriculturists of this colony have long suffered, that of individuals receiving Government salaries being tacitly allowed to trade. The instances our correseondent alludes to, are, it is well known, not the only ones of the same nature ; we might almost say the system is universal. Al- though the evil has long been pressing, in the present critical state of the colony it is still more so than before, and loudly calls for redress ; the reduced value of our exports in the home market, has so much embarrassed the financial affairs of settlers, that independent of the many other diffi- culties under which our trade and agricul- ture has at all times labored, this alone would be sufficient to paralizo all exertion for recovery, without also those ...

Annual Reports of the Protectors of Aborinines. Perth, January 9, 1848. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 10 February 1849

Annual Reports of the Protectors of Aborigines. Perth, January 9, 1848. .* a K., vuiuuury v, iOVS. Six,-As Protector of Aborigines, I have the honor to submit, for the information of His Excellency the Governor, my report for the year 1818. In the southwest districts, comprising the Murray, Leschenault, Vasse, and Augusta, the aggressive acts of the native population have been con- fined, during the above period, to cattle-spearing-acts which, however reprehensible, may in most cases be ac- counted for by the custom of the settlers in allowing their cattle to wander unherded for months over districts located only by tribes of roving aborigines. In the present dearth I of labor, and the depressed state of the farming interests, such a custom may in some degree be unavoidable ; but it is still very reprehensible, by placing an almost iriesistible temptation daily before the eyes of the hungry savage. At this time but one warrant remains unexecuted iu the above districts. At the Vasse,...
