English Sc Foreign. Loudon, March Vi. Tho racial jealousy existing be- ' tween the white aud coloured popu- 1 lations iu the .Southern States of ' America continues unabated, every 1 little conflict between representatives ' of the two factious adding to its bitterness It is a growiug source of ' uneasiness to the authorities, who are at thuir wit's cud for some feasible method of dealing with au evil which may at auy moment develop into a conflict which will upset every- thing constitutional. The latest offered solutiou oE thc problem is that of the wholesale migratiou of the negro population* to the rcceutly formed Congo Free .State in Africa. This proposal is being very favorably accepted by thc people chiefly con- cerned, and if carried into practice, will nc a remarkable sequel to the history of the American slave trade. It is Said [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian and Northern Territory Government Gazette — 14 March 1890

It is Said [By The Public] That our contemporary crawled round to one of the opposition candidates in its last " leader," and had actually the grace to talk of him as a gentleman. That the Press candidate reported only that portion of Mr. Beresford's speech which suited his own purpose to have a slap at the legal man ; and that this is deemed fighting the battle on an equal footing. That a certain bombastic genius who vegetates a few miles this side of Pine Creek had formed the unkind intention to simply crush a particular candidate when he mounted the stump there, but fled to Palmerston when he heard of the enemy's approach, and stopped away until the political party had gone over the field. That somebody should be hauled over the coals for not insisting on the Menmuir being properly provided with boats before being allowed to come up the Queensland coast. That the McKinlay and Mt. Wells is to be the Broken Hill of North Australia, and Union the Sandhurst. That it is time the Counc...

It was rrportt-d carly in the week thai at tho Block U mine, Broken Hill, in «hilh ?cmc few local speculators are interested, a run cf poor ore has been itru:k which will probably make divi deudä scarce tor some time to como. The question as to the superiority of ro'iers over stampers for quartz-crushing purposes, over which there was lately some contention between resid-nts of thc Union, is now -evidently settled for good as far as the Bryan mill is con c-.n-.ed. According to report that mill his l»een worn to such a degree as to bo p:ii:ive!y unsafe to work, and we hear that thc engineer has wired to the directors his disinclination to continue working the machine. The dies upon which the rollers do their work arc said to be all wont and knocked out of level, and a visitor who saw the mill at work, and who knows a thing or two. stated a few days ago that the whole thing was erratic in its work and a sure failure in principle and practice. Two methods of improving the...

Burrundie Athletic Sports. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian and Northern Territory Government Gazette — 21 March 1890

Burrundie Athletic Sports. On Monday last our festive friends at Burrundie held an athletic meeting in honour of thc patron saint of ould Ireland, St. Patrick, and it goes without saying that tho occasion was productive of much fun and enjoyment. Owing to the very short notice given the attend- ance of visitors was very limited, and with the exception of two or three Palmcrstonians who happened to be there at the time, the sports were purely local. But this did not mar the humor of the day ; as a matter of fact the pre- sence of the " foreign element " and the " dark horse from town " had the effect of causing much good-natured wrangling and generally enlivening what must otherwise have been a very slow meeting. Some of the events created keeu compe- tition, but on tho whole the class of work done was only very ordinary. The stewards were Messrs. R. D. Beresford, Lambert and Walter Rose, the two latter did the handicapping, Mr. J. H. Lawrie acted as judge, Mr. Beresford as starter, ...
