Another Bicycle Development. [Newspaper Article] — The Blayney Advocate and Carcoar Herald — 16 July 1898

Auotlier Bicycle Develop ment. The bicycle has reached another phase of its constant development through h novel | and highly interesting invention, consisting iu a musical instrument which may bo at tached to any bicyc'.e and plays popular airs, without the aid of the rider, in a loud aud melodious manner, when the machin ; is iu motion. Tiiis instrument, constitutes ail entertaining companion for the bicyclist on his roamin^s, which .ire frequently rather lonely ; it is so much more welcome as it will I be a companion «iitirely submissive to the ' rider's wUhes. It has been invented, paten ted aud placed upon the market by 11 tii 111 in Hamburg, and is fittingly called ' troulia- | dour,' afier the wandering inuMjians of the Middle Ages. This novelty is sure of great popularity .among cyclists. It will also bo beneficial in a -hygienic respect-, as excessive ly fast riding will be prevented. As mat Kn ot fact, the music only sounds well when the rider does not exceed a velcuity of...

"Get Your Hair Cut." [Newspaper Article] — The Blayney Advocate and Carcoar Herald — 16 July 1898

' Get Your Hair Cut.' Few know the origin or understand tho SUggestivencss of the aliore pxpres-iin, which some years ago was a | opu/ar ' chuff ing' retort throughout Australia, and i- even extensively used at the present time. It seems that up in prohibition Mildura, before the introduction of the cluh system. and when it was reaily hard to get a liquor, an enterprising b irber opened shop. His charges were fixed at shaving 9.1, haircut ting 1«, with a glass of strong liquor thrown in. Ha would ;,ive a customer any drink from ale tt whisky. The scheme caught on ep'endidly. Visitors marvelled, and used to remark what a clean shaven place Mildura was The community soon began to look us if they had been struck bald-huaded, ? Strangers hot in the know used to wonder why a mail got his hair cut half a dozen times a day, or almost had the skin shaved oft his face. Collapse in Havana Cigars. [Newspaper Article] — The Blayney Advocate and Carcoar Herald — 16 July 1898

fCallapse la Havana Cigars. An idea of the almost complete break down of the Havana cigar manufactories /says our Paris corespondent) may be gained from the following facts. About a year ago one of the largest manufactories stated, that in its leaf tobacco department 590 men and 200 wowen wi re employed, tha dai y pro duction being about 50,000 pounds ; while in the cigar factory, then employing 200 pien an ! 100 women, about 1, 003, 00 J cigars were produced every day. The same house recently employed only 30 men and 10 women in tlie tobacco department, daily p:oduL'ing 2500 pounds; and in the cigar, factory 20 men and 5 women, turning out on an average rather less than 75,000 cigars The best cigars have long liven exported ; in Havana itself enormous prices are being paid for second qua'ity cigars. More than half of the formerly flourishing -ig«r shops are clost d, and lhote fctill remaining open jceep but a scanty stock of poor trash.
