®|e lleiorL THURSDAY. JULY 15, 1869. DEAR BREAD. THE older residents of the colony will easily recall to mind the time when the price of the staff of life depended on the arrival or non-arrival of this or that vessel from America with bread-stuffs -liberal land laws, or what were pro bably intended as such, have to some extent" changed all that/' or at any rete after all the fanfaronnade that has been made about the amount of " settle " meat under the 42nd clause of the " 1865,Land Act,".the ".yello, wields " of waving grain,'"'" substantial* yco " mariry," &c.j '-we Had fondly believed, that such a thing as any great fluctua tion in bread could not-without a very exceptionally bad harvest-ever occur in this colony under its existent circumstances!. In this, however, we find we had reckoned without our host or without our bakers, and we are most disagreeably let into a secret that for some inexplicable reason we have to pay ten per cent, more on our loaf. Of course there is n...

CORPOREAL PUNISHMENTS. My masters of St. Albany liave you not beadles in your town, and things called whips ?. Shakespeare. IT is to be regretted that in our young community public safety has rendered, it necessary to go buck to a degrading punishment-in the use of the lash; exceptional crime must, however, be met with special punishment, and this argument will fully justify the:action of the law in endeavoring to suppress so vile an outrage as robbery accom panied by personal violence-in short, garotfcing"; "all hWor is duc'to the judge and bench of magistrates who, throw ing off all maudlin sympathy, deter mined that the citizen should be pro tected from the cowardly miscreants who are prepared to come within au inch of murder to secure a few shil lings; that is as far as the lash in ter rorem would go-and, therefore, just as Voltaire said, pour eneourager les autres, they ordered one Joeph Harris fifty lashes, to be paid in two instal ments-one moiety, nominally only, he received...

THE LAGOON QUESTION AGAIN. [Newspaper Article] — Record — 22 July 1869

THE LAGOON QUESTION AGAIN. , IT will be seen, from a paragraph iti the RECORD, ..that.the .three gentlemen appointed to survey and report upon the best method of providing dock ac commodation, &c., have done so, and, as might bei expected, recommend a line which is practically only a straiten ing of the; present Yarra, and which would most, effectually take away li'om Sandridge and Emerald any advan tages which might directly or collater ally arise, and would leave the lagoon drainage or utilisation a dead letter. Just as we anticipated/centralization is the principle, and unless Sandridge and the Hill bestir themselves they will find that some scheming landsharks have " worked the oracle," and that the swamp on the other side of the railway is to be rendered valuable pro perty, fit for land-jobbing speculation, by the intersection of the proposed ship canal, to the disparagement and depreciation of the vested interests now in existence.
