MELBOURNE. September 5th, 1874. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 9 September 1874

MELBOURNE. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. Y ' September 5th, 1874. . JLuc budget of Mr Service is not likely to run the gauntlet of the Assembly without being much changed in its essential features. Both the Freetraders and the Opposition Protectionists are wrathful— ^the former be cause the Treasurer has not the courage of his professed opinions, and the latter because while lie proclaims himself to - be devotedly attached to Fi;getrade he has: been stealing their policy, and through tlie theft managing to stick to office. Hispositioh is not very desirable. Several of 'the. trades have been holding meetings to induce him to ' change his policy, arid he will find, ho doubt, a large number who will pull his coat-tails' to arrest his attention to their peculiar business.- The bootmakers are making well grounded com plaints because his . contemplated change in the revenue will place some of their goods in the position of- having to pay duty equal in amount to. 20,0 per cent, of their fir...

SYDNEY. Sept. 4th, 1874. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 9 September 1874

Sydney;- ;? (from OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Sept. .4th, 1874. The great event of tho week has.been tho opening of the new General Post-office. This took place on Tuesday evening. The building was begunjn February, 1866, eight years and a half ago. In April, 1869, Prince Alfred laid' tlie'principal stone. Thougli. it has but a limited frontage towards George ct.rfifit.. fifift.. it is a noble buildinsr. The style is ornate and adapted to' the purpose -T and by opening a: lane, 32ft wide, from George-street to Pitt-street, its side, with the colonnade, is open to view. The polished granite pillars are the chief ornaments. The clock, 'aloft on the summit of the front, is too high for the hands to be observed ; so the maker has hit ? upon an . ingenious con trivance; the hour, in Roman letters, is shown in the centre, white letters on a black ground] . and a red ball goes, round the white circle of the circumference, marking the minutes. When the ball comes to XII, the number in the centr...
