The Forbes Advocate, FRIDAY, JANUARY 19, 1912. THE HOSPITAL COMMITTEE. [Newspaper Article] — Forbes Advocate — 19 January 1912

®jje Jkte locate, FRIDAY, JANUARY 19, 1912. THE HOSPITAL COMMITTEE. It ever the method of holding meetings of the Forbes Hospital Committee is to receive public reference, now is the time for it, as a new body of the kind is about to be elected. W.e approach the subject with diffidence, because we recognise how careful- must anyone be in aiming any thing in the •; nature .of criticism at such an institution as a public hospital. Those who have experience in tliese things, know-how long tongued people seem to take an especial delight in seizing upon hospital affairs for the exercise of their linguistic and imaginative faculties. Nothing, is so cheap and so easy, and withal ignorant, as to take hold of the niole-liill of hospital complaint, and make a towering mountain out of it. And those who have the interests of sueli grand institutions'truly, at heart, must at all times, hesitate, before themselves giving even the semblance of reason for setting all\x=req-\ too-ready tongues waggi...

AGRICULTURAL & PASTORAL NOTES. FOR THE MAN ON THE LAND AGRICULTURE. SCIENTIFIC CULTIVATION AND DROUGHT. [Newspaper Article] — Forbes Advocate — 19 January 1912

AGRICULTURAL & PASTORAL NOTES. FOR THE MAN ON THE LAND (Issued by the Department of Agriculture). AGRICULTURE. SCIENTIFIC CULTIVATION AND DROUGHT. "The greatest evils of brought are due to ignorant treatment of the soil." The farmer who has been practising a haphazard system of soil cultivation—with the conseciueut losses in crop yields whenever a season of irregular rainfall occurs should seriously consider the above remarks from "Campbell's Scientific Parmer." "While there may be ample rainfall in the aggregate during a season to produce a payable crop of wheat, it rarely—if ever—is regular enough during the growing period of the crop to give the plants their maximum requirement of moisture. Hence the necessity to store in the soil as much of the general rainfall for the crop to draw upon as possible—not to let it evaporate through neglect -of precautionary methods of cultivation. It has been pointed out time and again, and exemplified in practice, that moisture can be hel...

DAIRYING. LICE ON COWS. [Newspaper Article] — Forbes Advocate — 19 January 1912

DAIRYING. LICE ON COWS. Lice on cows seem to be troublesome in many of the dairying districts, judging from the number of inquiries received by the Department regarding the pest. The Long-nosed Cattle Louse (I-Iaematopinus vitull) is the species. In some cases, the animals are stated to be losing condition, and going off in their milk supply. A mixture of kerosene and soft soap, well rubbed into the skin, would soon have the effect of killing the lice. In the case of cattle that cannot be handled, spraying with, or dipping in kerosene emulsion is recommended. MILKING MACHINES AND DISEASE OP TI-IE UDDER. It has been contended by some dairymen that the use of-milking machines may cause disease of the udder. Mr Max Henry, M.R.C.V.S., of this Department, has made some observations in the matter, and his conclusions should be of much interest to users of milking machines and those contemplating using them. It has been said that the machines cansed hemorrhage of the udder; also inflammati...

WESTERN DISTRICT NEWS. PARS CRIBBED PROM OUR EXCHANGES. PARKES. [Newspaper Article] — Forbes Advocate — 19 January 1912

WESTERN DISTRICT NEWS. PARS CRIBBED PROM OUR EXCHANGES. PARKES. The Mayor and Waterworks Engineer visited Beargamil and Bumbury on Monday, and found practically no alteration in the position of the water supply. Oh, for one of Wragge's old-time spasmodic storms, or electric disturbances, that Bumbury might once more have 'full measure and running over!" The Farmers and Settlers' Association have decided to ask the Minister for Agriculture to have an analysis made of bleached wheat, with a view of ascertaining the actual damage occasioned to the milling qualities of the grain, and the deterioration in commercial value. There has been a steady increase in the local wheat traffic lately. Ticli\x=req-\ borne and Tullamore are contributing largely to the amount passing through by train, but practically nothing is coming from the Forbes end at present.

Before they left, his parents gave John strict instructions to set the - alarm, and rise at 5.30 prompt, for they knew John's little weakness in the matter of rising. Webster tells us is the " amount obtainable for a thing," and when that thing happens to be your hard cash, it behoves you to procure the best value possible. " If Webster had been a slangy Australian -he may have said that the act of obtaining value was the act of " getting a run for your money." Everybody likes to get their money's worth when they buy a thing. We know of nothing more annoying tha.n to buy an article and to find out afterwards that we have paid too much for it.
