Total' Eclipse of the; Moon A toial eclipse of the moon ocourred; last Friday night, nnd was watched, with-j-interest by a'lnrge number'of' persons. 'Although the early part of the evening wan cloudy the sky was clear at the time of the first, contact, and the conditions were favourable for purposes of observation, except at about midnight when a slight haze obscured ihe 'shadow. The times of the different phases of the eclipse, as supplied by the observatory, were as follows : — First distinct shadow, 10.83 p.m. ; middle of the eclipse, 11.18 p. m. ; appearance of copperio tints, 11. 40 ; total phase, 1.30 a.m. (24th) ; last contact, 2.3 a.m. For astronomical purposes, Mr. II. C. Russell states, eclipses of the moon, which occur at comparatively frequent intervals, are not of very great value.
