Anthrax or Cumberland GERMS IN MILK. WRITTEN FOR THE "SYDNEY STOCK AND STATION JOURNAL." II. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 2 June 1896

Anthrax or Cumberland GERMS IN MILK. Written for the ' Sydney Stock and Station Journal.' (By The Globe Trotter.) II. A Hindoo once saw a drop of water under a microscope, and the life in it filled his soul with horror. He was a kind of vegetarian, because his re ligion forbids the taking of life. He wouldn t kill a mosquito or anything that bit him, so you can imagine his horror at seeing a drop of turbid water from the Ganges. But let me say here that pure water is quite life less. Water is composed of two gases, oxygen and hydrogen, and life is absent in the^ combination. But if you leave water standing about it will soon fill up with life, because the air is full of germs. Years ago I used to keep a row of little bottles for the production of distinct gp.rms. In one was placed a small piece of beef, in another a speck of cabbage, in another a bit of bread. When filled with ?water and left for a few days they be came alive with millions and billions and quadrillions (I don't know...

Marking Australian Meat. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 2 June 1896

Marking Australian Meat. ' Bruni,' writing to the 'Austral- asian ' on t his question, says : — ' There is evidently a very strong feeling among British stockowners that all foreign meat exposed for sale in the kingdom should be distinguished in some way from the home grown. Lately a bill passed the second read ing in the House of Commons which provides that the sellers of foreign meat shall be licensed, and that the meat when broken up shall be marked in some way, to denote its origin. The proposal to license the sellers of foreign meat has met with the ap proval of all who are connected with the live-stock industry in Greab Britain, but it is doubted if the mark ing of the meat can be carried out effectively. The licensing of a butcher and compelling him to exhibit his license in a conspicious place in his shop, it is thought, will meet all re quirements. People who deal at such shops will take measures to avoid paying the higher price for foreign meat under the impression that th...

The Playfair Memorial. UNVEILING OF THE NEW FOUNTAIN AT FLEMINGTON. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 2 June 1896

The Playfair Memorial. UNVEILING OF THE NEW FOUNTAIN AT FLEMINGTON. A ceremony of an imposing nature was performed by the Mayor of Sydney (Isaac Ellis Ives, Esq.), on Thursday afternoon last, in the form of the unveiling of a magnificent marble drinking fountain, which has been erected to the memory of the late Alderman Thomas Playfair. The fountain was constructed by Mr. W. P. Mclntosh, of Hereford street, Forest Lodge, under the super vision of the City Surveyor (R. W. Richards, Esq.). It is really a beauti ful piece of work, and, best of all, everything about it is colonial make. The circular basin is of marble from Caloola Creek, near Bathurst, sur mounted by an ornamental marble column, the whole being fixed upon an elaborately-worked base of trachyte stone from Bowral. The two drink ing cups are silver plated, as are the taps. Around the basin is the inscrip tion : 'In memory of Alderman Thomas Playfair, 1875-93. Erected by the Municipal Council -.f Sydney.' At the base is ins...

The Bourke Show. THE BANQUET. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 2 June 1896

The Bourke Show. THE B.1NQUET. Last Thursday night the annual show banquet was held in Tobin's Hall, and Bourke was there in its representative men. The chair was taken by the president, Mr. Mark Tully, who was supported by the Postmaster General (the Hon. Jos. Cook), Mr. Dowell O'Reilly, Mr. T. R. Smith and Mr. Millen, M's.L.A. The Mayor proposed ' The Ministry,' to which the Postmaster responded. He spoke well and to the point, and his speech, temperate in tone, clear and forceful, was a credit to the Ministry. He congratulated the association upon the excellent display, which had agreeably surprised him. Regarding the Ministry he claimed that, though it made no pretensions to superhuman ability, it had made an honest and fearless attempt to carry out its pro fessed policy in a practical and businesslike manner. Its watchword ?was devotion. It recognised that progress was necessary in politics as elsewhere, and was determined that, so far as it could influence matters, wise and pr...
