This is why they so strongly object to tho Dalgoty site, but New South Wales as a whole is not in sympathy with Sydney in this matter. Sydney is merely in tent upon making itself the port of tho Federal capital, and grasping whatever advantages may be the consequence and outcome of such an achievement. The people of ...

AUSTRALIAN BUSHRANGING. THE EARLY DAYS. CHAPTER V.-Continued. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 3 January 1906

AUSTRALIAN BUSHRANGENG. THE IE-AJeS/Z' ZD^LYS. By CHARLES WHITE. Ciiapteu V. — Continued. The . story ran that the coach travelling between Bathurst and Sydney hnd boon 'stuck-up' when Fry was a passenger. The bush rangers demanded that ho should give up his money, and Fry replied that all ho had was in an opossum rug which he had with him in the coach. For this Scotchey now desired to ' pay him out.' Suddenly appearing at the station they found him standing at the door of his log hut. They asked if he was Dr. Gibson's overseer, and he assented. ???' Then,' said Scotchey, 'we are coming to fry you in your own fat.' But they had a smart man to deal with. Turning sharp into the door Fry secured it,...

FROM THE BULLETIN. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 3 January 1906

FROM THE BULLETIN. Jay's big London softgoods shop, tho originnl of the ''Kay's' that the 'Girl' comes from in the play just revived in Sydney, lias 'a reputation for securing damsels of exceptional beauty of face and ngure to biiow ott gowns and hats. Ugly countesses and millionairesses buy the goods in the illusive hope that, once inside them, they will look as well as the handsome show girls. Several of the Jay belles, realising that little more than effective posing is needed in some modern English plays, have found their way into fairly prominent positions on the London stage. And a lady who had a leading part ina recent notable Australian law suit was a Girl from Jay's. * « * Bert Levy, who was a young Australian artist when he supplied the 'Bulletin' with an occasional study from Jew-life, is now appear ing at a Boston Hall as a young English artist. Meaker and Clarke's Gaslight Handicap. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 3 January 1906

Meaker and Clarke's Gaslight Handicap. Tub first of the two handicaps pro moted for race nights was run on Monday night. There was an ex ceptionally large attendance, in cluding a number of bookmakers. The gaslight plant installed along the tracks gave a brilliant light, and was a considerable improve ment on the old torchlight system. The tracks were in tip top condi tion and very fast. At the marks the runners were protected by an enclosure, which also concealed the start from all but those who had paid for the privilege. Mr. Rogers had charge of the gun, and dispatched his men with pleas- . ing promptness. Messrs. T. Ken nelly [Oobargo] and Richards acted as judges, and sent back two or three dead heats to be run off. The prize money was cut up as fol lows : First .£7, second £1 10s, third 10s. During the night H. V. Higgins was disqualified for three months, and F. Taylor and T. Simpson for 0 months each for 'inconsistent running.' Altogether there were nineteen heats. Fol lowin...

ODDS AND ENDS. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 3 January 1906

ODDS AND ENDS. In Russia it is the custom at ' a big dinner party for each lady to smoko a tiny cigarette after each course. This is said, to' not only' assist digestion, but it also romoves the flavor of the previous course from the palate. The people of Nice are about to erect a statute to the memory of a cook, Nebain Dubois. Ho was for many years head cook to the Kaiser's grandfather, King William of Prussia, obtaining for his services a salary of ^2500 a year. As soon as the war of 1S70 was declared, he resigned his position to . light against his former master. Tho statue to the patriotic cook will appropriately be erected hi the central market. ; .
