CROOKED RIVER. (FROM A CORRESPONDENT) Dear Sir, Your kind courtesy in giving insertion to my last communication induce me to write again as you have no correspondent here. Some of your readers may wish to know what we are doing in this quarter; there fore I will give you a little of the news going the rounds of the River. so as sorro o00 0 s oPPSLa3n rfus Sr,--Although strangers to Gippsland, we are informed that you are willing at all times to listen to any report beneficial to the district. In the middle of last month, three miners, all old mates left Melbourne per. steamer for Gippsland and arrived in Sale per .coach. After re maining a few days in Sale and making what few purchases we required there, we - tarted for Jericho. On our way up we were informed a new creek had been opened succeesfully on the Sale side of Mount Useful. "We at once proceeded there and found this report correct enough, but the majority of the iuners (in all between five and six hundred) were nearly starving, short, not only of tools, but worse, and what we consider a disgrace to the storekeepers of North Gippsland, provisions. Men who have money in their pockets feel fearfully annoyed when starved out and unable to purchase the comthon necessaries of life, whereas, if enterprising men had used a little speculative energy ...

For inistnce I have a mate who is. very fond of going on the spree; consequeitly, 1 am kept idle nearly half my tilne and can scalcely makp ticker, .while, vith cnosianlt work, we could earlt from £3 'to £41 per week.
