The Jewish Congregation at Athens. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 24 December 1897

The Jewish Congregation at Athens. There are not many Jews in Athens. Some 300 souls make up the whole congregation. But if we remember that afc the beginning of the present century there were only three families, and that the present congregation is | not more than 20 years old, the fact offers no : surprise. The synagogue is barely distm : guishable from the dwelling houses in the i Jewisn quarter, except Dy cue lantern wni.cn is affixed to the entrance. The rabbi who presides at its services came about six years ago from Smyrna. He performs, in addition to his duties of Minister and Chazan, also those of Teacher and Shochet, and as there are three services each day, he need not fear dying of ennui. For the whole of this arduous work he receives 100 drachms per month, which the Greek Government accords him as a public teacher. The Jewish quarter of Athens lies along one of the streets leading off Hermes-street, at the junction of which stands a large clump of trees The houses are ...

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN NEWS. A meeting of old scholars of the Jews' Free School was called at the office of Mr. S. Saunders, J.P., for the purpose of getting up a testimonial to Moses Angel, Esq., on the attainment of his Diamond Jubilee as its head master. It was resolved that an illuminated address should be presented to that gentleman by the old scholars of Adelaide, and that Lord Rothschild should be requested to make the farther resolved that Mr. S Saunders should word the address and forward same in accord ance with the previous resolution. I enclose you a copy with the hope that it will meet with your approval for publication. The address, which was beautifully illuminated by Mr. Harry Lyons, a son of one of the old pupils of Mr. Angel's school, was forwarded on behalf of eight former pupils now resident in South Australia, and is part of a general movement all over the world among the old scholars of this great school, which has an average attend ance of 3000 daily. Unsworth School and Kindergarten. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 24 December 1897

Unsworth School and Kindergarten. Thursday afternoon, the 16th instant, was made the occasion of a very happy ending to the year's work at the above school, conducted by the Misses Victorsen at London-street, Enmore. The spacious schoolroom was prettily decorated by the elder pupils with greens and flowers. In one of the class rooms kindergarten work done by children of from 4 to 8 years of age was displayed for the inspection of parents and friends. After the visitors had inspected the work an adjourn ment was made to the schoolroom to hear a pro gramme of songs and recitations given by the pupils, all of which were thoroughly appreciated. Refreshments were then handed round, after which certificates and prizes were presented to the successful scholars by the Rev. J. H. Landau. Speaking of the kindergarten system, which is the one used in this school for the younger pupils, the rev. gentleman stated how pleased he was to be present on this auspicious occasion, as he took an especia...

Chevra Keddisha. To the Editor of the "Hebrew Standard." [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 24 December 1897

Chevra Keddisha. To the Editor of the ' Hebrew Standard.' Dear Sir, — I think the promoters of this society have cause for consideration. The meeting held on Sunday last was a most pronounced success, and although the programme followed was not altogether on the lines marked out by these gentleman, still it must be a source of satisfaction to those that their views of the necessity of such a societv was fullv endorsed bv those present There is not the slightest doubt the agitators were perfectly justified in the course pursued. Complaints of thoughtless indifference and heartlesness to those whose social positions carried with it — no influence. — That the reverend gentlemen present fully recognised that there was something in the air was made apparent by their reference to the large number present, and also by their supreme anxiety to get the conduct of the meeting, and election of committee entirely in their own hands. The proverbar respect the average Jew shows to his Clergy was ...

Great Synagogue, Sydney. SERMON BY REV. J. H. LANDAU. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 24 December 1897

Great Synagogue, Sydney. SERMON BY REV. J. H. LANDAU. The services on Saturday were conducted by the Rev. A.B. Davis, assisted by the Rev. J. H. Landau and Rev. A. D. Wolinski. The weather was particu larly oppressive. Just prior to the conclusion of the services the Rev. J. H. Landau addressed the congre gants of the mission of the pulpit, pointing out that the congregants in too many instances did not interest themselves sufficiently in the services, and expected the preacher to entertain them to make the service attrac tive, thus converting the pulpit into an actors platform. He considered that the congregants snoum not pose as critics, but look upon the preacher as a servant of the Lord, through whom a message was being sent for their guidance. He hoped that the lessons preached in the Synagogues would be repeated in the homes and ex plained to the childien. The Rev. gentleman then announced the usual monthly service for children will be held in the Synagogue on Sabbath next (Sh...

The meeting for the establishment of a ' Chevra Keddisha ' was the result of the agi tation set on foot by the proprietor j of this journal. It was a very brilliant success, and as the Rev. gentleman remarked, it was a pity ? that a like interest was not manifested in many other communal matters. We do not wish to anticipate, but we have another great surprise in store — the success of our next movement will be established both financially and socially as the biggest undertaking attempted by the Jews of Australia. Put to the present. The Chevra meeting drifted, owing to the popu larity of its purposes into a rather irregular course. As it stands, a society has been formed, officers elected, and money received without more than a desirability being ex pressed that a Chevra be formed. 'We should advisr— and we shall watch the welfare with a keen interest — that the committee get to work, as soon as possible and rectify those many omissions that the errrr of the preliminary meeting has...
