At the Shire Council meeting at Murrayville on Tuesday, Cr P. J. O'Dea was appointed president of the Shire for the ensuing twelve months. The Walpeup Shire Council at last meeting decided to vote £20 to the Red Cross Society in con- nection with the patriotic fund being raised by that body.   A letter was received on Friday last by Cr. H. W. Pickering from Lady Margaret Stanley, suggesting the lines a patriotic movement should take. The lines suggested had already been agreed upon locally. A public holiday has been pro- claimed for Wednesday next, 9th September when the combined State Schools will hold a monster   picnic on the Tiega reserve. The picnic conmmittee express regret at having to clash with other func-   tions, but cannot postpone the   picnic on account of the holiday being granted.
