PANBULA SUNDAY SCHOOL TREAT. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 2 June 1866

rAlvBULA SUNDAY SCHOOL TREAT. This event took place 011 Wednesday, the 23rd ult., and passed off to tbe entire satisfaction of all parties. On tlie previous Sunday the Rev. 3. L. Knigbt baring solicited the assistance and co-operation of. tbe congregation for tbe occasion, large quantities of flour, tea, sugar, and currants were sent the next day to Mrs. Gwynne and Mrs. Manning, who undertook to convert these popular commcditiesinto such shape as children like to see them. Wednesday greatly favoured our friends, being a'beau\x=req-\ tiful day, and at 10 a.m. the children, with their parents and friends, assembled at the church where they were met by Mrs. Gwynne,—their friend, teacher, _ and bene\x=req-\ factress—with other ladies and gentlemen. They then marched in procession to the Parsonage, where, drawing ; up into a circle, they sung a hymn, and gave three cheers for Mrs. Knigbt, who, we extremely regret to add, was 'prevented by indisposition from joining tbe happy company. EDEN, TWOFOLD BAY. OPENING OF THE NEW PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 2 June 1866

EDEN, TWOFOLD BAY. (From, our Cokkksposdekt.) OPENING OF THE NEW PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. Ox Thursday last the great event which has been looked forward to with so much intertst, and which has been casting its shadow far and wide, appeared and fully idealized all the anticipated pleasure und interest. I of course allude to the opening of the Presbyterian church here, which time lias I believe been anxiously awaited by many. The labours of the day began at noon by serviee, at which the llev. Dr. Lang officiated, fin fulfilment of a promise made some time since to the Rev. Mr. lioddie. The little church was comfortably crowded, even the aisle being occupied by cross seats. It is estimated that over 200 people gathered ou the occasion. The service commenced with singing the 100th Fsalm; afterwards the Rev. Doctor engaged iu prayer. The 1st chapter of 1st Corinthians was read and followed by singing the 25th Psalm. Tlje doctor then drew attention to the 22nd, 23rd, 24th verses of the chapte...

DR. LANG'S NOTES ON BEGA, PANBULA, AND EDEN. (Abridged from Empire.) [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 9 June 1866

j Da. LANG-'S NOTES ON BEGrA, PAX\x=req-\ I BULA, AND EDEN. (Abridged from Empire.) Monday, 21st —Mr. Wren very kindly drove nie across in his buggy from Ka:um uka to Bega, the distance for a wheel carriage being about twclve miles although not more than c-iglit. or nine by a different route oil horseback. The Befra country is decidedly the finest ! have seenin New. South Wales. It is beautifully diversified with hill and dale; lightly wooded in its natural state, and the trees of an umbrageous character; quite unlike the Ihe spindle shanks «rc find in the bush around Sydney. It is equally iid <jited also for pasture and agi'icufcurejjgjhe soil, even to the tops of the Il l's, being of iiist rate character. On the whole, the Bega country has more of an English aspect ilmn perhaps any other part ol tue coiony, anq tne omy Uiing wanting to complete the resemblance is the Squire's house and grounds every mile or so. But this will all come i» time, for to uf& the tail...

CHAPTER VIII. MARGARET OWENSON. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 9 June 1866

CHAPTEK VIII. MARGARET OWENSON. Margaret Owenson was indeed a puzzle, and one that, as day by day our acquaintance ripened iuto intimacy, became more intricate^ and, at the same time, interesting. A young, singularly handsome and accomplished woman living alone in her strange house, with strange servants, with habits and ways that bespoke a long* resi\x=req-\ dence—if not birth in a foreign land— would have attracted the attention of the-, most careless on-looker : strange arid out\x=req-\ of-the-way, however, as her mere outward ] habits we>D> they were nothing to her strange bizaree^baracter, At the -commencement of our visits to the cottage, she liad attempted W court Oeej-le's frleiivlship by caresses, gifts of flowers and fruit, or other articles of value in most children's eyes; but her advances had been so decidedly repulsed by the young lady, her gifts declined, or, if accepted, carelessly destroyed under her eyes, her caresses unnoticed or even avoided, that she soon ...

CHAPTER IX. AN ARM WITH A GOLDEN BRACELET. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 9 June 1866

CHAPTER IX. ABM WITH A GOLDEN BRACELET. It was a pouring September day. We met each other with imprecations against the weather, exclamations of disgust at everything, and with every sign of anger, disappointment, and bad temper. . We had planneda particularly agreeable excursion for that day. 'Confoundedly provoking!' Gaunt exclaimed, as he watched the pouring down of the rain of the climbing roses, on the already drenched flowerbeds, on the gravel walks, on everything and anything. ' Patter patter, how hopeless that sound of rain I is!' I sensibly arranged myself with pens, ink, and paper, and left. Dick to his groans and smoke. After writing a very good article and a capital critique for the , which, I solemnly declare, owed tbeir piquancy to my wit, and not,as Gaunt iU-naturedliiilfc\x=req-\ clared, to that little meteorological irllMslall pointment, I felt refreshed and my rielgggp invigorated, and, as a light recreation^ I determined to go and have a ride. ! It was about four ...

NATIONALISM v. FENIANISM. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 9 June 1866

NATIONALISM v. FENIAXIS3I. The Dublin Freeman contains another letter from John Martin, of '48 celebrity, in answer to the Rev. Sir. Red\x=req-\ jnond, a Catholic clergyman. The writer addresses himself to the question of Nationality. He states:—"It is true tbat I ardently desire to avert the danger of a bloody cmflict between the Irish population and the English army. And it is true that I consider the Irish Nationalists to be quite unable to wrest this country from the grasp of England by means of their own military strength, and without the aid of a firat-rate foreign power. It is also true that I shrink with horror from the prospects nf civil war and revolutionary anarchy, ending in a state of more hopeless misery than before; and ihat my conviction as a politician and my aspirations as a patriot make me an advocate for the restoration of our national constitution and not for its destruction. So far I agree with Father Bedmond. if I rightly understand his opinions upon our natio...
