THE NEW LAND BILL. MEETING OF FARMERS AT MAITLAND. [Newspaper Article] — The Kadina and Wallaroo Times — 31 October 1888

THE NEW LAND BILL. MEETING OP FARMEBS AT MAITLAND. A largely attended meeting of farmers ] was held at the ~Mait1and Institute, ou Monday afternoon, to' consider the New Land Bill, The Chairman of the Yorke's Peninsula District Council (Mr Freeman) was voted to the chair. The CHAIEMAN said the meeting had been convened at the instance of the District Council. They recognised that the Bill was an improvement, but it oould not be called a liberal bill yet. Itjdid not co _ far enough. *s it did not provide any relief for those who had taken their land up on purebase. Clause 15 was a con-' cession to new men, but it did not admit of the Iiand Board interfering with the price of land held, except to fix the rental where the agreement was to be surrended for a lease. There had been a meeting on the same subject, at Ardrossan, on Thursday last, and he would read a list of the resolutions that were carried. It seemed to bioi from the attitude of the Commissioner in the appointment of land b...

THE INSTITUTE COMMITTEE AND PUBLIC ENTERTAINMENTS. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — The Kadina and Wallaroo Times — 31 October 1888

THE INSTITUTE COMMITTEE AND PUBLIC ENTERTAINMENTS. TO THE EDITOB. SIB,-At the request, of a several in habitants of Wallaroo, I write to thank the committee of the Wallaroo Institute (and especially the two members who allowed their prejudice to so blind their judgment) for the public spirited manner in which they endeavour to popularise toe Institute Hall as a place of entertain ment. First, by throwing every obstacle in the way of obtaining the Halt, and, secondly, when that difficulty was .got over, bj patting on such a prohibitive charge that it will not be asked for a second time. ID the third place the com mittee is to be congratulated on their consistency in having a special charge for one portion of the community which is less than one-fourth of what I was charg ed, while in the case of the former more trouble is caused, and more damage is done to the hall and seats than by my entertainment. I would also remark that the same men form that committee who have been pitchforked ...

GREEN'S PLAINS. [Newspaper Article] — The Kadina and Wallaroo Times — 31 October 1888

GREEN'S PLAINS. The season has been even more than could be desired for haymaking which i'b oow in fall swing. Not a straw has been damaged by the rain. The yield is rery light, varying from two to four acres per ton ; nothing like the first of the season promised. There is actually less crop on the land now than was two months ago, and the ehaaces of a fair wheat crop are every (day growing smaller and beauti fully less. It is. really astonishing how thie wheat has managed to keep up . appearances so well, baring for weeks past had no stimulant except wind, and most of that has been hot winds. Yet even now some fair crops are to be seen, and most of them are not yet beyond redemption. Many farmers are expres sing a desire to quit and seek a better land; but where can they go ? New South Wales is no better than this; Vic toria, the farmers paradise, -is infested with rabbits; Queensland is out of the question; and Tasmania is too far away. The West Australian Government may now bave...

HE CAUGHT IT. [Newspaper Article] — The Kadina and Wallaroo Times — 31 October 1888

HE CAUGHT IT. " Bill Charters was a very originaltnan, that is. if he was oat of a job he'd devise some way of his own to procure the wherewithal to keep a fire in the grate and provisions in the pantry," said a man in a Main Street cigar store the other night. " Bill was also fond-of fishing. On winter evenings at homey if he had nothing bet ter to do, he would ;haul out. his finhwig tackle and inspect it thoroughly, and.ihen, after making two or three new^f&gled fly-hooks, he'd place, the outfit back in its box, at the same time knowing that he'd be unable to use his tackle for probably are months. " Bill lived in Boston when I first knew him. That was IS or 20 years ago. He was a tinsmith by trade. ? X went up one night to see him concerning some work he had been engaged on several days. Bill was in the dining-room examining his fishing-tackle when I entered. After settling our tinsmitbing business, he be gan explaining the different methods used to catch the various spec...

TICKERA. October 30, 1888. [Newspaper Article] — The Kadina and Wallaroo Times — 3 November 1888

TICKERA. October 30, 1888. I regret to bare to announce the death of ; Mr Allans on. our local storekeeper, which occurred here on the 29tb. He ceased had beea suffering from bronchitis for some time past, bat it was thonght he was getting over it, when a fit of coughing seized him, and in 10 minutes be was no more. It appears, according to the doe tor, that he was also suffering from fatty degeneration of the heart, and this is partly supposed to be the cause of his sudden decease. General regret is felt all over the district at the event, as deceased was of a quiet aud retiring dis position, and made himself generally respected by all those that became ac quainted with him. Haymaking is in fall swing, bat the general average is very light. Bain is stjll anxiously looked for, but if it does come it will be too late to do much good. It will, however, give.a SQpply to those back from the Beetaloo mains, some of which are already busy water carting.
