Careless People [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 11 January 1896

Careless People Frank Schuettler , $ 1 . 00 . G . F . Bowser , $ 1 . 00 . No adddress . Utica , 111 ., $ 1 . 00 , no name . The above amounts have been received with imperfect addresses so that we are unable to locate the senders . There will be no war , so we might as well relegate the savage blood corpuscles , inherited from our barbaric ancestry , which are only -content to spill or be spilled , back to the obscure corner in which they belong . It would indeed be a severe comment upon our boasted Christian civilization if the two leading Christian nations should begin cutting each others throats over a few sections of land which belong to neither . It is the most surprising thing , however , to hear ministers who claim to be heralds of the Prince of Peace shouting for war . You who are so thoughtlessly shouting to let the bulldogs of war loose , have you measured the cost ? What is to be gained ? Perhaps a little what is , from the standpoint of higher civilization , mis-named gl...

Speculation is Gambling [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 11 January 1896

Speculation is Gambling W HAT is politely called speculation on the Board of Trade is in fact gambling . When the wheel turns up a fortune , the friends congratulate the • operator as a smalt business man . But when the wheel tosses a victim s wealth to the four winds , then he is unfortunate and some even whisper that he speculated too much . In any case some one loses , some poor victim goes under and ruin comes upon him and his family , if he has . a family . ... If the business were called by its right name it would not seem so respectable and , possibly , some men would- be deterred from casting their all on this turn of a wheel or throw • of a dice . A case is now before Judge Kohisaat , in , Chicago , involv- : ing the question whether dealing in stocks is gambling . Albert B . Pullman was a brother of George M . Pullman , who died Dec . 18 , 1893 . The claim was for $ 9 , 610 , which was advanced to the deceased while the latter was dealing in stocks . The heirs of Mr . Pull...

Violation [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 11 January 1896

Violation A TRUST is a trust , by whatever narme designated or covered up . The people are coming to know a trust when they see it . It is a violation of law . Tbe officers of the law and the courts are still slow in smelling out the trust . The railroads are violating the law all the time as some of them have from its passage been determined to ignore , as far as it was safe , the Inter-State Commerce Act . It has just cometo light in Chicagoithat the recent agreement known as the Joint Traffic Association is in trouble because some of its members had previously made contracts which would be contrary to the terms of the trust . One feature of the tangle is that the elevator companies which are dealing with the Michigan Central and the Wabash have contracts with these two roads , which will not expire for several years , and which specify that the allowances for transferring grain shall be as therein stated . These contracts are perfectly legal , and cannot be abrogated by the railr...

The Tribune Quotes Scripture [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 11 January 1896

The Tribune Quotes Scripture IN commenting upon the probable refusal of the Senate to pass the bond bill , and thus add unnecessarily to the indebtedness of tlie nation , the Chicago Tribune says : The situation is a pitiable one , but not without hope , though it is not to be expected that the free silver maniacs will desist from their opposition to honest measures when they find there is no chance of their doing more than block the wheels of legislation . They may be compared to the forty fellows who pledged themselves by solemn oath not to eat or drink till they had killed the Apostle Paul , but did not succeed . This may be taken as a sample of the fairness of the goldbug organs . The horuest measures , which so-called silver maniacs refuse to pass , all measures looking to the refunding of the greenbacks into bonds for the benefit of the Tribune s long-felt suffering bond holders , would saddle some fifteen million dollars more interest upon an already interest-burdened people ...

4 Voice from Chicago [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 11 January 1896

4 Voice from Chicago S OME definite and tangible results should come from the great mass meeting in Chicasfo on behalf of outraged Armenia , Salisbury was ignored and a cablegram sent directly to Queen Victoria . It is said that Gladstone bows this venerable head with shame whenever the unchecked atrocities of the Turk are mentioned . Even Lord Rosebery , the predecessor of Salisbury as premier , expresses deep chagrin . The great body of the English people are in keen sympathy with the suffering Armenian Christians . The cablegram— -sent also to the Czar—was as follows : We have heen looking with horror at the deliberate attempt to exterminate a peaceful _ and historic people , the Armenians . The policy and traditions of our people are against our interference by force of arms . We , citizens of Chicago , in mass , meeting assembled , as fellow Christians with a common ancestry , appeal to you to stop this continued wholesale slaughter . If cixumstaires which your government canno...

A Veteran Speaks [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 11 January 1896

A Veteran Speaks IN the course of his remarks General O . O . Howard , referring to responsibility , spoke as follows : England has a people behind the government , and the officials , and the diplomacy , and when that people pronounces its will , as it will , sooner or later , then it can move on ; but can England go to war without being sustained by her people ? No . No more can we . And I do not know that we want them to go to war . I do not know that war is the settlement I do not know but the settlement will be through the Christian conduct of brave women who take their lives in their hands and go there and stay there . ( Applause . ) Now , I am considered somewhat of a warrior —( applause)—and if I followed my natural inclinations I would like to lead a column of men straight through that country —( great applause)—and with 30 , 000 men I would be afraid of nobody . ( Applause . ) But I do not think that the wisest plan ; I do not think that any such purpose would be at all pr...

Colorphobia [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 11 January 1896

Colorphobia ONE man from Tennessee stops his paper , or , rather , refuses to renew for another year , because of our editorial criticism of the Florida school law which is plainly in violation of the Civil Rights Act As this is the only man among many thousands in the South , who has objected , we take it there is prevailing , as we stated in the editorial , a more rational view and just feeling than there was thirty years ago . The article began as follows : The movement towards a proper and Christian recognition of rthe colored man in the South is growing all the time ; and the action of the Florida legislature was pointed out as exceptional , as in fact it is . Of course if any of our readers are opposed to a proper and Christian recognition of the colored man , they can hardly expect the editors of an enlightened and progressive paper to agree with them or write , on this subject , so as to please them . We are inclined to believe that our other Tennessee subscribers will see t...

Current Topics [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 11 January 1896

Current Topics President Cleveland has come out with his new bond issue but , for some cause , modified the original plan . In the first place no absolute deal is made with the Wall Street syndicate . There is an attempt to offer a popular loan . The old law did not permit any denomination less than $ 50 and this offer permits the loan to be taken in sums of $ 50 or multiples thereof . There is another feature which militates against a popular loan . It should not require payment in gold . Many persons with a comparative small amount to invest , including trust money of all kinds and that belonging to unsettled estates might seek such an investment ; but why require gold ? Why not take any legal tender ? Even if nothing but gold wMl answer the ultimate purpose of the president , to maintain the treasury reserve , any legal tender could be received from the people and afterwards converted into gold by the Secretary of the Treasury . If in reality a popular loan is to be floated , one...
