J $ | isccllattciw Breaking Prairie . EDITOBS WESTEBN RUB At .: —In your issue of January 10 th you publish a letter from J . T . A ., who asks for information in regard to breaking prairie . I would like the privilege of telling the way we do in Dakota , and raise everything except wheat the first year . The first and earliest breaking we can do is for corn . Break as soon as the frost is ont of the ground , and about three to three and a half inches deep . Let it lie until May . By that time it has got quite warm , and the corn will sprout in a few days . We plant with a hand planter , though some chop it in . The yield here the first season averages twenty-five bushels to the acre , when pnt in as I suggest . Oats sown broadcast on fresh breaking , and then simply harrowed in yielded twenty bushels to the acre . Flax treated the same way as oats will yield from five to eight bushels per acre . Potatoes can be dropped in the furrow and covered with the next , and they will produce...

| tUim « $ anil ffirattflfr Alliances . EDITOBS WKBTKBN ROBAI .: —I would like to say a few words in regard to alliances . I suppose alliances are to promote the good interests of the farmers and produoing olass . But I would like to ask what good they oan do as long as their members belong to different political parties ? I , for one , cannot see what good they oan do . In my opinion legislation has a great deal to do with farmers interests , and as long as one-third or one half of the farmers and laboring men vote with the Republican party , and a large per cent , with the Democrats , and a few with the anti-monopoly party , what good oan they accomplish for themselves ? For a man to say he is an anti-monopolist , and at the same time go to the polls and vote for men who are avowed friends of the monopolists through the country , certainly does not practice what he preaches ; and for farmers to meet , and organize , and pass resolutions , etc ., and then vote for men that are not ...

Item" * [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and American Stockman — 28 February 1885

Item * Cold Weather Hints . A folded newspaper , covering the chest and shoulders , under a cloak and coat , will be found very comfortable in extreme oold weather , especially while riding . A noiseless way of feeding a coal fire is to pnt a shovelful of coal in a paper bag ; prepare a half-dozen bags at a time ; use one or more as needed , and thus the noise and dust generally accompanying the usual mode of replenishing a fire will be avoided . When about to take a long sleighride make ready apiece of joist ( of any kind of hard wood , suoh as house-builders use ) , the length of the sleigh-seat and twice the thickness of common brick ; heat it on the stove or in the oven . It is surprising how very hot such a piece of wood will become without burning , and how very long it will retain heat . On snoh a seat , and covered with a buffalo robe , I have known people to ride seventy miles comfortably and the wood to be quite warm at the journey s end . A similar piece for the feet , at...

Asleep in a chair lay Pnssy-Cat-Mow , Jn his gray silk gown , so dainty and neat , While oat in tho cold the March winds blew , And rattled the casements , and stormed and beat A brigbt-oyod mouse , in another gray gown , Had cuddled ap close to Fassy-Cat-Mew In the cushioned seat , and nestled down In a way no sensible mouse would do ! At last our Pussy-Cat-Mew awoke ; Ho stretched himself in the easy chair , And rubbed his eyes ; and began to stroke His gray mustache—and the mouse was there . Aha , Miss Mouse ! growled Passy-Cat-Mew . ( Hat brave Miss Mouse did not even wink , ) This chair , as yon see , will not hold two , And you are tlie one to go , I think ! The mouse said neither I wont ! nor I will ! But only stared ut Pussy-Cat-Mew , Who trembled with rage . What ! silent still ? To settle dispute Ill swallow you ! . Then the children cried , Ho , ho ! ha , ha ! Till their...

Iftlitorial [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and American Stockman — 28 February 1885

Iftlitorial Farmers to the Rescue . Human nature is selfish , and perhaps we all oftener act from selfish than from other motives . If we oan touch mens weaknesses we are pretty sure to gain their attention . In such ease we shall very likely be as successful as the tramp who was employed by the landlord . A few honrs after he was employed he was told to go to the depot with the bus to meet the train . He was informed that there was a political convention in town , bnt that its politics and that of the opposition house agreed , and most of the delegates would go there . He was ordered to do the best he could under the circumstances . . He did as he was commanded , and when he returned the bus was full , the top covered with passengers , two were hanging on the steps , and a procession with gripsacks brought up the rear . As soon as the astonished landlord could provide for his guests , he sought his tramp solicitor , and asked him how in the world he got the custom . Why , said he ,...
