" " SZBTOH OP ILLINOIS . [Newspaper Article] — Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal — 2 February 1832

SZBTOH OP ILLINOIS . To the Editors of the Journal : I am aware that the character of a new country is in some measure established by its general reputation for health . All other advantages it rimy possess , are viewed as objects of secondary importance . I am also aware , that the fame of Illinois , and more particularly that part commonly called the Sangamo country , has long since reached the most remote sections of the Union , and with it have also gone misrepresentations , calculated to retard emigration , and thereby prevent its early settlement and prosperity . Those misrepresentations have generally been made by reek ess emigrants from the lower order of society , who , in search of a better home , have found their way to the far west , exposed by poverty to the most inclement weather ; and after remaining one season , almost without a shelter to protect them from the storm , and perhaps had the misfortune to have a little sickness in their families—they pack up , bag and...

[ Our Farmers must smile at the following English mode of cultivating wheat : ] Culture of Wheat The extremes of early and late sowing , as formerly adopted in various districts , according to their respective qualities , seem to be fast fading away , even pertinaciously attached to them . Experience has proved that the main season for autumnal wheat-sowing , in almost all districts , of this country , is from the middle of September to the end of October , admitting , as the except tion rather than the rule , an occasional extension of a week or two , as induced by circumstances of soil , season , and situation . There is another practice which is quietly und steadily creeping on , and , where it once gets footin -, will firmly establish itself by its manifest utility . We allude to the practice of drilling corn und pulse . This operation has been widely extended by the introduction of mai- thus brought within die reach of persons of small means , and give opportunities to tlie war...

General axpret of Palestine . —The hills still stand round about Jerusalem , as they stood in the days of David and Solomon . — The dew falls on Hermon , the cedars grow on Lebanon , and Kishup , that ancient river , draws its stream from Tabor as in the times of old . The sea of Galilee still presents the same natural accompaniments . The ! i- _ r-ti ( e springs up by tlie way si la , the sycamore spreads its branches , and tin ; vines and olives still climb the sides of mountains . The desolation which covered the cities of the plain is not less striking at the present hour , than when Moses , with an inspired pen , recorded the judgment of God ; the Hwellings of Jordon are not less regular in their rise than when the Hebrews first approached its banks ; and he who goes down from Jerusalem to Jericho still incurs the greatest hazard » f falling among thieves . There is , in foot , in the scenery and manners of Palestine , a perpetuity that accords well with the everlasting im...

SI-AM BOAT NAVIGATION . — It would be folly , perhaps , ever to anticipate for our village advantages from steam boat navigation equal to those which St . Louis has derived fro n that source . Yet such an anticipation can not be deemed more chimerical than was the project of . running steam boats from the mouth of the Ohio , to St . Louis in 1817 . — We copy some interesting reminiscences on this subject , and remarks on Western Steam Boat navigation , generally , from the last St . Louis Republican . The time must soon come when the wants of this country will require a rail road to the Illinois river , or that the Sangamo be improved so as to present no obstruction to the passage of the smaller class of We recollect very well Ihe arrival of the 1-17 .
