'4 DEMOCRATIC BANNER. E. C. at 8. f. HURRAY. Editors. LOUISIANA. MISSOURI. MONDAY MORNING, SEPT. 3. 1849. 23" Whn General Taylor was first men tioned in connection with the Presidency, thousands of Democrats as well as Whigs supported him because they believed him untrammeled by party shackles, and that his election would be hailed as the forerun ner of a political millennium, when the party hatchet would be buried, and the lion and the Jamb would lie down contented in the same lair. It was for this reason that some of the whigs became jealous of the number of democrat that supported him on account of his "no-party" doctrines, and used eve ry means to get him committed to the mea sures of the whig party. In all these ef forts they utterly failed. They, ultimately coaxed, flattered and bullied with the same meets. To their numerous inquiries his invariable reply was to this end, that if he was elected President at all, he would be the President of the "whole people", and not of a par...
