The Weekly Expositor I J. A. Menzif.s, Editor and Prop i BROCKW AY CENTRE. - MICH It is painfully evident that insanity is on the increase in the United Status. In a recent compilation by the Insurance Chronicle covering four years' statistics of suicides it was shown that tho num ber attributable to insanity had in creased from 15C in 18S2-3 to 405 in 1885 80. In other causes there was fluctuation. Business trouble, for in stance, caused 127 suicides in 1882 3, 174 in 1884-5 and only 115 In 1885-C. Dissipation, for tho four years given re spectively, caused 131, 111, 114 and 84. ! But insanity made an annual increase. 1 the figures for tho four years being 15G , 276, 294, 405, i Theodore Roosevelt and Henry Lodge have written two papers on "CroBs-Country Riding in QAmcriea," which will appear in the July Century, with numerous illustrations, An inter esting feature of this number is A Day in Surrey with William Morris," by EmmaLazerus. Mr. Morris's scientific views regarding capita...

The Weekly Expositor J. A. Mknzik.s, Kiiitor ai-d I'rop HROCKWAY CENTKK, Mil.'. I TIM KLY TOPICS. It id stated that the president since his return has announced his intention of keeping all the wedding presents. "Why should I notP" ho is quoted as saying. "Wed ding presents are given to the bride. 1 do no not accept the gifts as president of United States, but they ore sent to my wife Surely no objection can be taken to such proceeding." The ques tion whether the president would ac cept the gifts sent him has caused con siderable comment, some people con tending that as president ho c uld not accept them The discussion has been considered out of pla -c, and the presi dent's action, therefore settles the question. Among the bills introduced in th Senate the other day was one that, if it shall be'ome u law, will vest in the president the sole power of appoint ing a largo number of oflicers who are now appointed "by and with the ad vice and consent of the Senate." Among these are postm...

1 IIEE WEDDING PRESENT. 'lluh! it is Clarence Hyde's step." And Rosa Eldon sprang to her feet rosy and mailing, with the Ireshly plucked heliotrope treuiblinn among her glossy brown braids, and her pret ty, blue dres floating around her YiVo an azure cloud. Only eighteen, and very fair and lovely was our little ltosa a trifle spoiled and wilful, perhaps, but what else could one expect? Kvery one pet , ted and made much of her, and Clar ence Hyde thought herthe fairest spec ' imen of feminine humanity that ever the sun shone on. Lizzy Eldon made room for her sis ter Lizzy, just one year younger, and scarcely less fair, yet very different in character. Lizzy was quiet, and sage, and demure, while Rosa rattled away like a merry mountain stream flow ing over its mossy stones. Lizzy thought her bister perfection, while Rosa was ahva3rs lecturing Lizzy in a capricious fashion, and laying down the law to her after the most approv ed manner of elder sisters. "How niceit must be tobe engaged...

The Weekly Expositor J. A. Mknziks, Editor and Prop UROCKWAY CENTRE. Midi- GENERAL NOTES. Tho masterly series of papers ou "Great American Cities" in Harper's Magazine is continued in the August Issue by Edmund Kirke's contribution on Detroit, which is the leading article of a rich number. The history of "Tho City of the tho Straits" is cleverly out lined from the time before Henry Hudson set foot on Manhattan Island, when the Hurons pointed out its site to Champlain as tho gate-way to 4 the vast seas of sweet water." The lirst settle ment by the adventurous Frenchman Cadilac, tho romantic frontier life of its early period, the revolutionary scenes clustering about this Western centre of the struggle for freedom, the surprising flood of Yankee immigration which was opened by tho Erie canal, and its as" tounding growth ever since, are all deftly described. But the ci y of to-day is the main subject, and its character istics in enterprise, society.architecture, and culturo are well tr...
