From a European Corre^pondcut. [Newspaper Article] — California Star — 25 December 1847

From a European Corre^pondcut. Under a head, such as this, the Wash. Union of April last published a very lengthy, but no less ably written letter, dated, Paris, Feb. 23, 1847. Consuming an opening with a political analyzation of the position and prospects of the two belligerant nations, the writer turns his attention to the acquirement of territory, "whether it in future shall constitute slave States or free States." A universal belief, to all appearances, is entertained that, in any convention of peace and friendship which may hereafter be conducted, whether sooner or later, between the Union and Mexico, we shall secure additional. territory, For my part, I care not how much, particularly in the region of the Pacific, nor upon what terms, so they be just. Whether, in future, it shall constitute, slave Slates or free States, is not a matter, compared with the magnitude of the object to be attained, even of momentary consideration. The number of negroes held to service, can never be...

ATRIP ACROSS THE DAY [Newspaper Article] — California Star — 25 December 1847

A TRIP ACROSS THE BAY. No. 1. Early along in the month of October, and on moring as benign and perfectly beautiful as ever romance writer dunst allow his imaginative faculties to conceive, ere boarded, ia company with good fellows twain, a gay specimen of our Bay water craft, large and trim -- sufficiently commodious, we might have said, for a married man aad two youthful bachelors, to an excursion of pleasure inclined. This being presented equivalent to a married man. a moderately sized sharer of his earthly burdens. and any small quantity of smallest children, the exact dimensions of the vessel are ascertained. Were Corporal Streeter we, the state of the weather would have been announced considerable in the outset. The monitor mercury in its heavenward aspirations, reminded as how desirable would be a "lodge ia some mighty contiguity of shade," and at the shortest possible notice we were equipped for a jaunt, and well-resolved into the "unviolated woods," once across the waters, t...

(For the California Star.] [Newspaper Article] — California Star — 25 December 1847

(For the California Star.] Mr K.otrr.s.— In travelling through the various por- ! tions of the country, 1 observe that 'lie greatest imaginable anxiety exists, in reference to the organisation of a temporary civil government, and especially in reference to the organization of the judicial department; wherever I go, tbe people pour forth their complaints to me, as though I had both the power and means of relieving their necessities. They tell me that they did look upon the hoisting of the American dag, in this remote region, as a most happy and glorious event, and that, in that emblem, that occult representation of human liberty, and human | rights, they thought they beheld the prelude of advancing happiness and prospenty — the dawn of happier days ; but 1 in Uiese their happy and most reasonable expectations they ' say, they have been disappointed. Hear them ! " The | doors of justice are closed upon us." "We have neither a> curity of person nor property." "In these respe...

In Odd Fallows Initiation. [Newspaper Article] — California Star — 1 January 1848

In Odd Fallows Initiation. •r »i.«nr rLCTciiER. Having been previously proposed and elected, I started one evening in company with a friend to go to the Lodge for the purpose of being initiated. My friend, who was already a mernber of the Order, took me through many narrow streets and dark alleys, turned several corners, and finally brought me to a strange looking building at the extreme end of a long, narrow, and crooked alley, in a remote part of the city, where I could not recollect of ever having been before. From the dim lights which were reflected from the windows of the adjacent buildings, the one to which my friend had conducted me, and in which as he informed me the Lodge met, appeared to be an antique structure, which seemed to partake both of the Gothic and the Egyptian order. At any rate it was an old looking affair, and seemed to be a fit place for the assembling together of a society of Odd Fellows. I followed my friend up a long winding staircase, through several narr...

Kind Readers, with ourselves, having bade adieu to the Old Year, and saluted with gay compiments his yourthful successor, we dare presume ye in the mood for a merry interchange of greetings; accept, if you please, in the greatest sincerity and in the prescribed forms, those of the season. We have the pleasure of appearing before you through the columns of our paper, secretly elated, that our measured movements were not distanced by the fleet footed stranger. We have turned our first volume with the Old Year, penned, save this, or its evens, our last paragraph, ex-scissored the "scrap," numbered the last page, and now withdraw therefrom, welcoming the New Year on. Wishing "many happy returns of the same" to all, we cannot, consistently, write another line. Inconsistently, perhaps, then, with this we lead the column, end Volume I, and close our labors for the "used up" Year. Late Mexican Intelligence - Capture of Mexico City. - Recent advices from La Paz, have reached Monterey, Dates ...
