The Old Cellar Door. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 28 April 1860

The Old Cellar Door. Howaweet to remember the pleasures gone by, The time of our boyhood and glee ; What bosom but swells with a half choking sigh When in fancy our old haunts we sec ? But sweetest and dearest of all to the heart, When "night throws her shadows before," Are those days which we spent with juvenile art, Sliding down on the Old Cellar Door. How brightly shone in the gay Summer sun, How sweetly it smiled at our side ; And the nails seemed to laugh and encourage the fun, As over their smooth heads we glide, They, too, oft deceived us, and stayed our career, Oft our trousers maliciously tore ; Turned our joys to distress, and a smile to a tear, Those nails in the Old Cellar Door. Leap Year. Then let us nerve our bashful hearts, And quell each timid doubt, And raise our drooping hopes, and smooth Our wrinkled features out; And write thereon, in lcttcss plain, That those may read who run— "Proposals tbankfully received Till eighteen sixty-one." The Chrysopolis. There are ma...

SPRING. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 5 May 1860

SPRING. M. E. WOOD. There's something balmy, something sweet, In the wind as it murmurs by ; And a rosy blush is swaying, swaying, Over the soft blue sky. The fleecy clouds have a golden fringe, As they float to the west away; Returning life, returning bloom, Herald the bright spring day. The lilac is waving her fingers blue In the garden and over the mould ; Fair spring is spreading softly now A carpet of green and gold! The unfolding alder and maple leaves Exhale to the warm sunlight Their gift of fragrance, and on the hedge Arc nodding the may blooms white. The limpid streams in the meadows sing, The birds carol 'mong the trees ; And like specks of amber floating, floating, Wave the honey bees. Oh! there's a spell of gladness and beauty, That comes with blossoming time ; That flows to the heart in sadness enfolded, And 'tis hovering over thine and mine!

Throughout the length and breadth of our land to-day—in cities, in villages, in hamlets and in groves, upon the mountain tops, and in the valleys, Odd Fellows meet to renew their pledges of friendship, love and truth, to strengthen the links of that chain, and brighten those virtues which binds them into one great brotherhood. To go back to the fountain i'.sself frcm whence those virtues flow, and by deep draughts to imbibe new life and refreshed energy. We meet to celebrate a great vi...

From Keyesville. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 5 May 1860

From Keyesville. Keyesville, April 20th,'1860. Mr. Editor: —Nature, in her eloquence is now speaking to us in the lovely garb of Spring, as it is opening upon us with its . wonted granduer and gorgeousness, decking the hills and valleys in their virgin attire, diversified with a myraid of hues; impale the soul in rapture and inspire the senses with dreams of bliss; dreams which to gaze upon such objects can only then have birth, I for it is said, that flowers are the language of angels, whereby they write their names that we may read "and admire their beauty. As we wandered the other afternoon, among these emblems of and names of another world, we inwardly sighed to be alone, and wished for some one to share with us in our appreciation of these lovely flowers, such a one as the soul—alas! our pen falters, no matter, we will sigh it away, yes, we are told, "There is luxury in a sigh, It gives the heart relief, It hurst's the cords around it chain'd, And soothes the deepest grief." We...
