EGGROLLS.. . Yes, within central Texas, such a place does exist where one can listen to the sounds of pure blue grass music, munch on a fresh egg roll, browse through artistically hand-crafted Jewelry, macramae, belts, paintings, or just about anything else your "arty spirits" may desire. Such a setting is to be found on the lively "Drag" in Austin. Strolling among college students along Guadelupe Street, beginning at 19th and continuing up to 24th Street, you can begin to hear what appears to be progressive country and a special flavor of blue grass music. You begin to get lost in a different world. These "vibs" grow more intent as you round the corner at 24th Street and slowly manuever your way through the crowds. Young musicians, intently con- centrating on the sounds their instruments are send ing out, appear through the crowds. instruments as unusual as gas cans and saws blend harmoniously with the usual banjos and guitars. text and photos bv Richard Moree ft

U IIIIJ IILLPI ^.V\.VA.Y.\ .A; wmm+J#?*isamm to BL UEGRA SS Hours prior to the musicians, prospective vendors, along with their wares, pets, lunches, guitars and blankets, brave the dark pre-dawn chill so that they can pick a good spot to set up. Throughout the day (Saturday) the street vendors hawk their wares to a varied mix of curious prospects. As one observes the ever present crowds, he will see that the college students do not have a monoply on purchasing wares. So should you become bored with the "weekend blues" and desire a change of pace, why not take a leisurely drive to Austin, stroll along the "Drag", listen to music played by talented musicians, browse through creative hand- crafted art objects and wear- ing apparel, and possibly partake of freshly prepared egg rolls, health foods and drinks.

THE BASTROP COUNTY TIMES, SMITHVILLE, TEXAS THURSDAY. FEBRUARY 19, 1916 : Ubii pinions GOT THE FEDERAL BLUES Interesting to note, these days, is the way federal law £ seems to apply to the federal government only when those federales want it to. Take the BISD's latest confrontation. $ (See story, page 1) The current flap is that the school district, :;j with a little less than 40% minority population, is being told :§ by the federales to recruit and hire blacks until not the minority, but the black proportion of professional teaching g staff is 44%. As part of the affirmative action plan dictated >1; by HEW, BISD is now required to determine and record S thf race of every applicant inquiring about a job, plus the g race of the interv iewer he or she talks to. All this in order to '$■ ensure that hiring is done on a non-racial basis. Meanwhile back at the ranch, another branch of the >•: government, the EEOC, has required for several years that j| no record of race -- not even ...
