DECEMBER 198G *5? \i) ^ Southwest Chinese Journal 16 IV What wc have in common, the recent immigrant as well as the third generation Chinese American, the young as well as the old, Chinese men as well as Chinese women, Chinese professionals as well as Chinese workers, is the experience of being Chinese in America. It is this shared experience that can make the Houston Chinese population a community. The experience of being Chinese in America is essen- tially a historical experience. By this I mean that our own comtemporary experience of being Chinese in America, what each of us experiences daily, has been shaped by the experiences of those Chinese who came before us. This shared historical experience has its beginnings in the arrival of large numbers of Chinese laborers into America in the early 1850s. This shared historical experience is made up not only of what these Chinese and those who came after them suffered, but more importantly, how these people, our immediate ancestors, re...

A] ^ 4H Southwest Chinese Journal DECEMBER 1980 LOST HORIZONS By RAYMOND LEW The popular press has pointed to the dramatic in- crease in the number of Chinese living in the Houston area. From the 1970 census figure of 3,677, the Houston Chinese population has grown to an estimated 20,000. And it is still growing. II A community is a group of people who share some long- standing set of common interests and act on the basis of these shared concerns. What do the Chinese in Houston have in common that would make it possible for us to act as a united group? One could say that the Chinese in Houston have nothing in common. Rather than looking for ...

DECEMBER 1980 & $7 Southwest Chinese Journal 20 REFLECTIONS cont. tation for those who lobby for a foreign power and distain the Chinese Americans for their loyalty to America. In- deed, some of these dissidents are not ANERICA>" CITIZENS to begin with. Let's hope that there are more tranquil paths ahead. We Chinese Americans know it is futile to work with these dissidents. So it is probably in our best interest to ignore these subversive activities and individuals. Under the American system of democracy, even disloyal dissidents are permitted to strut and flaunt. But in the final anal- ysis, right is might. CBC NEWS The Chinese Baptist Church of Houston has planned many events to celebrate this Holiday season.
