Feature Section Love of books a priceless gift By Willard Abraham. Ph.I) Copley News Service Q. Among my happiest child- hood experiences were the times I spent in our neighborhood public library. and the joy and pride with which I carried home and read the treasures I borrowed For years I forgot those happ> moments, but they are now re- lived through my own children who are (> and 8 years old They share my enthusiasm, and 1 hope they pick up my reading habit that has lasted through so many years. Until recently I didn't know of the many changes and develop- ments in public libraries. One thing remains the same, however: The love of books and the gentle- ness, knowledge, and helpfulness of the staff. Their dedication is such a refreshing discovery in the current world of harshness and lack of concern for others. A One of the major gifts par- ents can give their children is the love for books. It can be transmit- ted especially through the model they provide Any parent or child...

Backyard Gardener Not all beetles are bad either. The ground beetle and its larvae feed chiefly on harmful garden in- sects. and are decidedly worthwhile friends. Often found in the soil and under stones, ground beetles are large, black and shiny, rather ferocious looking and fast moving The larvae are flat, band- ed. bristly, and have sharp-looking hairy appendages growing from the end of their bodies. Don't step on these friends Lacewings are another group of insects helpful to the home gar- dener. The adult has beautiful gauzv green or brown wings and long hairlike antennae, and is about 1 3-inch long. She lays oval eggs singlv at the end of hairlike stalks. The larvae are called aphid-lions, for the job they do best They are ugly, bristly crea- tures with wicked looking pincer- type jaws About th...

The City of Sachse has receiv- ed credits of $6,192.59 and $10,154 from the North Texas Municipal Water District because of misbillings. Discrepancies were noted by The Sentinel in December 1987, when Sachse's water usage from August-December was 145,930,- 000 gallons, compared with 88,836,000 gallons for the same period one year earlier. As there were only 37 housing startups during the past year, The Sentinel contacted NTMWD to find out why there was such a large increase in usage.
