PROFITABLE AND UNPROFITABLE COWS. [Newspaper Article] — Ringwood and Croydon Chronicle — 27 November 1914

PROFITABLE AND UNPROFIT ABLE COWS. Only a rich man can afford to keep unprofitable cows. Sometimes it is said that a man, inless he is well--off, cannot afford to ownI good cows, but that is not true. If he can afford to own any, he can afford to own the best The man who refuses to take the necessary stops to secure a good cow. must work double time to get any profit ,and wait years before lihe can breed up to a higher standard. It has to be realised at tihe beginnilg that it is better to put all the money in half a dozen good cows, than in a dozen inferior ones. The profits of dailrying depend entirely upaon the cows and the system of raising feedl and gring it to the animals. It has been proved that good, not fancy bred, cows have made £10 profit per year, net for their own ers. after the cost of feed had been de ducted, and ill other charges. If one good cow will make that profit, a herd of 10 or 20 should not a fairly good income. 'I'Thlis can be done in almost any region where ...

THE MASTER PASSION. CHAPTER XXVII. "GOOD-BYE, SWEETHEART, GOOD-BYE." [Newspaper Article] — Ringwood and Croydon Chronicle — 27 November 1914

- -- THE - MIASTER PASSION. CHAPTEIR XXVII. "GOOD-BYE, SWEETHEART, GOOD-BYE." The sun had long ago sank to rest be hind the towers of Windsor,.and eoveu ing was 'slowly drawing her veil over the panting earth. The day of work was over, and the labourers had left the fields and gone home to the quiet of their cottages. A soft mist hung over the valley, where the roses were bathed in refreshing dews, and every tassel of the bluceell was made into a fairy gob lot. SThe river seemed to be half asleep, waiting to be waked into shining silver by the first moonbeam; but the sound of its waters was pleasant to the ear, and those who were tired with the mill round of pleasure, or literary labour, were glad to sit still and be quiet, with softer thoughts, for which they gener ally had no time, thronging through heart and brain. Suddenly the twilight fled before the light of many lamps, and the stillness was broken by the notes of a waltz emerging fromn a clumnp of evergreens, behind which Coo...

MELBOURNE LETTER [Newspaper Article] — Ringwood and Croydon Chronicle — 27 November 1914

MELBOURNE LETTER (From our Special Correspondent.) The way s0ems to have booeen cleared at lust to put into use tho German cteamers which have been idly accumu latiang barnacles in our port since the outbrohk of the war. 'It has taken a long timne to 'oamply with the niceties •hioh nations which play the war game according to the rules, have to ob- serve. But apparently they have now all been punctilously discharged, and the very useful .,Jditions to the ship- ping are to be put to good uso. A request, has been made to have them fitted with woat is necessary to en able them to relio\eve the cool storage places of Melbo lrne of some of the produce, witli which they are crammed. and snich cannot be despatched to the oversoas markets that are awaiting it fr.r for lack of steamers with rofriger ated accomlodation. But the diflicul ties in the way of providing the German boats with the equipment requisite for that important department of trans port trade seem. to be insuperable. Therofor...

FOR WOMEN [Newspaper Article] — Ringwood and Croydon Chronicle — 27 November 1914

FOR WOMEN (By "Ambrosino") Fifty of overy one hundred persons who go to public 'libraries ask, accord ing to librarians: 'Whbit is a good book for nie to read?" In bther words the choice of reading is, in this large percentage, left to the discretionary direction of the man or woman behind the public library desk. Very few persons, it is said, ask for a,. definite book. Accepting- this condition as a fact, the responsibility of the librar in is great, but the responsibility atof the communityv 'n selecting a librarian is even greater. . That. librarians are selected with too little thought of the in.portance of their position is general ly admittoed. As a matter of fact, the importance that attachos itself to the position is little knbwn. But with the knowledge that it is in the power of the librarian to direct the reading of every other person who comes to the library, the matter assumes a signifi cant gravity that communities' should weigh more carefully. Of course tlso intelligen...
