AN OLD LANDMARK TO BE DEMOLISHED. MELBOURNE, Wednesday. [Newspaper Article] — The Ballarat Courier — 8 January 1914

AN OLD LANDMARK TO BE DEMOLISHED. MELBOURNE, Wednesday. The old Doncaster Tower, which for many years has been a landmark, but was recently condemned as unsafe, is to be turned into fruit cases, which will be sold to orchardists of the district. Messrs. Marshall Bros., case-makers, of High street, Kew, yesterday purchased the tower for this purpose. Work of demolishing the structure will be put in hand on Monday, though the method to be employed has not yet been decided upon. The tower may be dis- mantled as it was built, section by sec- tion, or, and this is more likely, may be pulled down bodily by use of a jack. Strong wire ropes at present assist to maintain the tower's stabilty, and when these are removed it should be an easy matter to haul it over. Built entirely of Oregon, the tower is 320 feet in height, and with a plant, which will be erected upon the spot, it is anticipated that many thousands of fruit-cases will be manufactured from the timber.
