A Rousing Sermon. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 14 November 1891

A Bousing Sermon. In St. Patrick's Church, Parramatta, pn last Sunday week, Father M'Encroc dealt specially with the all-absorbing subject pf intemperance. His remarks were of the lnost scathing character. The drunkard was referred tp a beast and a brute. Drunkenness was described as the shortest road to the grave and the straying road to hell. ' If you die drunk,' said the pre acher, ' and a mortal sin is on your soul, any sin he knew of, the vice of intemper ance placed its disciples further outside the pale of salvation if they die drunk. After the sermon Father M'Encroe in vited those willing to join to go to the altar rails. Nearly all the women and girla in the church (which was crowded) went forward, as wejl as many men, in cluding leading members of the congre gation. There could not have been less than 150 converts. We publish below a very good story told by a city contemporary regarding the ad vantages of advertising, and wherein will be found a good moral. It runB thus :—...

Nobody wants that Gold Ring. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 14 November 1891

3^o'body -wants that Q-old Biag. For nearly 100 years a certain family of working people living in Pmis luivc ended their lives by suicide. Prom father to son, from mother to daughter, has descended a plain gold ring, and on the finger of every one of these suicides, ns they lay in death, this ling has been found. Only last year the body of a young man who had killed himself was brought to the Morgue, and on Iiir finger was the fatal golden circlet. He was the last of his race. The ring was buried with tho cprpsc, from which no one ac quainted with its history will have the cpurage to remove it. Thp mental taint in this family came from some remote ancestor, and was intensified by their recognition of it until it became a, controlling force : and tho ring was accepted as imposing upon its possessor the obligatipn to commit suicide, after the exutnple of the perso.n whp last wore it.
