Our Melbourne Letter. [Newspaper Article] — Morwell Advertiser — 8 June 1889

Our Melbourne Letter. (ERnO tOUR OW COitESPONDEN'r.,) The prevailing topic during the week has been the doings of Parliament whoe the House meets. That luent will have happened before this letter appears in print. Unless inembers meet with the serious intention of .getting through the work they are paid to perform, not half the proposed measures will become law. There will be the usual wrangling and debate over the address, but comnmon decency demands that the subject should be disposed of during the first four days of the session, instead of being dragged over five weeks, as happened last year. The great work of the session will he the Metropolitan Board of Works Bill. But, if current rumor speaks truly, the Cabinet has not yet agreed upon two of the most essential points of the measure, and it would be folly to bring the Bill forward until these matters are settled. They relate, firstly, to ways and means -how the necessary funds are to be raised. Secondly to the constitution of t...

The Latest Railway Accident. [Newspaper Article] — Morwell Advertiser — 8 June 1889

'File Latest Railway Accideint. Some attempt was madue on Thursday to Inravel the mystery coninected with the Franklin-street railway accident. The detailed examination of all the circumstances of the catastrophe -mold not of course be commenced at so short notice. still all the passible theories connected with the aRcident received more or less consideration, with the result that the cause remained more matter of doubt then . er. On one detail alone the possihility of the points having twcn moved before the whole train had passed over them-was anything like a satisfactory result attained. Tle commissioners assured. themselves by a practical trial that it was impossible that the points could have been shifted in the manner snLestLted, and as an immediate result the pIintsomen in charge were exonerstedt from blame and allowed? to reslnme work. The remaining qtoentions moust be threshed out at length by the special htsant appointed Thlursday morning to con dutl the official inquiry. T...
