Further; details-of tho fighting between the Americans and the Spaniards, under General Linares, Btates that a body of ' Roosevelt's Rough Riders ' (cow-boys), organised by Mr. Theodore Roosevelt, late Assistant-Secretary to the navy, and com manded by Colonel Wood, together with a detachment of regular troops under Gjneral Young, started to dislodge General Linares from the heights of Savilla. The heat was intense, many of the Ameri can forces were prostrated, and the heavy equipment was abandoned.. The cactus jungle and the thick undergrowth rendered the marching a work of great difficulty.
