Two candidates were an nounced, the retiring alderman, Cornelius Haul) an. and Arthur- Mancer. In the ordin ary course of thiogs the poll would have hern taken last Saturday, but on Friday morning Mr. Iiannsn died suddenly. The returning officer decided no poll would be necessary, and declared Mr. Mar.c'V; elected. The tup portere of the dcceaBed gentleman do not wish Mr. Mincer to represent then),\and Mr. Mancer himseU-- ncngnises that l his position is an awkward one. Many rate payers think that the returni&g-officer was ant acting strictly according to law in acting as he did, and as there appears t-- be no pre cedent thesuppoitert of the deceased alder man are not likely to remain passive.

As the ball strikes the screen the circuit is broken and the time at which it passed through each screen recorded on a i -jock oomioeleil with it by wire, so that the.. difference in tin; time at which it struck each screen is accurately re corded. All that is necessary then to work out the problem is to lind how far apart the screens stand from each other.

Smith's Mistake. [Newspaper Article] — The Murrurundi Times and Liverpool Plains Gazette — 12 February 1898

Smith's Mistake. Mr. John Smith's facs lowered with passion. The little, cold, grey eyes flashed with unwonted fire. It must hav been something out of the common way that could throw a srdate country merchant, a pattern of propriety, and a leading citizen or Tat'leborough, into such a state. Not to make a mystery of it, tho oast Was simply this: On returning from a business trip, which hud de tained him some days less than he had expected, Mr. Smith found on his desk among some letters brought from the posi-offic* in bis absence, one address to ' Mrs. John Smith.' The ' Mre.' was not very plainly written, and might readily have been mistaken for ' Air.,' the reason we may surmise, why thn letter was left at tbe office, in s'ead of being carried directly to tbo house. It is possible chat Mr. Smith fell in to a like error, or it may be, that he took advantage of the ambiguous pre fix to gratify a little harmless marital curiosity ; for, like other Smiths, he was but mortal, and not ex...
