A SAD SUICIDE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hillston Spectator and Lachlan River Advertiser — 10 September 1898

A SAD SUICIDE. On Saturday evening last considerable sensation was caused in Hillston, by the news that a young man named Robert Prestage, well - known iu tho town   and district, had committed suicide by hanging himself. The unfortunate fellow, who with an older brother, had been   in business as a market gardener for some time, and was well respected, had lately followed the occupation of a carrier, and   within the last week had been employed shearing at Cowl Cowl. From what we can learn, there had been very little to lead to the belief that any matter was preying upon the mind of the deceased, sufficient to cause him to commit the rash act. He arrived home from the station early on Saturday afternoon, and employed himself in washing his clothing. Towards the evening his older brother went to call him to tea, and on pushing opon the door of the hut, was horror-stricken to find his brothor suspended by a clothes line to a beam of the hut. The...

ODDS & ENDS. [Newspaper Article] — The Hillston Spectator and Lachlan River Advertiser — 17 September 1898

ODDS & ENDS, Marseilles has a woman 107 years old who earns her living by selling newspapers. Only three per cent, of the total number of vessels built in the Unicoil Kingdom last year ? were sailing shins. Somebody has calculated that when rilling a bicycle at tho rate of twelve miles an hour we .consume 2,300 cubic inches of' air per niinnte. Bats abound on the Scilly Islands, near the seashore. At low tide crabs drift, into, the underground avenues leading to the rat-holes, and the rats bite., off their legs to prevent their escape. The longest stretch of railway with out a curve is claimed by travellers to be that of tho Argentine Pacific Kail way, from Buenos Ay res to the foot of tlie Andes. .For 211 miles it is with out a curve, unci has no cutting or eiu bankirent deeper than 2ft. or 3ft. Tlie quaint ancient military cere mony known as the 'Queen's Keys' ! still takes place in the Tower of Lon don at eleven o'clock every night, except on 'Tuesdays and Fridays, when i...

MOUNT HOPE [Newspaper Article] — The Hillston Spectator and Lachlan River Advertiser — 17 September 1898

MOUNT HOPE ( From our own correspondent) , Mining matters oontinue very dull in this distriot. The last refining at the New Mount Hopo mine produced 21 tona 18 cwt. copper for a 7 weeks' smelting run, while tho Groat Central's output for a slightly longer period was 22] tons. Both these returns are far from payable and consequently the em ployees havo not muoh money to oiiculato, so business and trade are muoh restricted. Ths New Mount Hopo mine haB in con templation the erection of Haucook's concen trators, whiob will certainly l\ave tho efleot of much incroasing the output, as thousands of tons of ore could be utilized wbioh are at present on the surfaeo, andwhich only require modern methods of treatmeut to bo made available for smelting and prove highly re munerative to all concerned. On Friday night weok the Mount Hopo Cricket Club brought their fifth annual ball to a successful issue in Clark's Hall, when 80 ladies and gentlomon took part.
