The following letter from Mr Hay, to Mr. George Lewis of London, relative to the treatment to his Brother, Mr. Thomas Lewis, of this Town, by the Local Go- vernment, proves, how legally he suffered,   and the estimation the British Govern-   ment hold a gentleman in, who, instead of appealing to the laws of honor for justifi- cation of his conduct, makes it matter for the interference of judicial officers. We shall hear something more of Mr. Lewis's affair before it is settled.     Downing-street, 29th July, 1835, Sir, I am directed by Lord Glenelg, to ac- knowledge the receipt of your letter of the 19th Inst.with its enclosures, and to acquaint you in     replv, that his Lordship had already received, through the Lieutenant Governor of Van Dieman's Land, the memorial from your brother, of which you enclosed a copy, and that, under all the cir-   cumstances of the case, he has been induced to ...

To the Editor. [Newspaper Article] — The Cornwall Chronicle — 2 January 1836

To the Editor. Sir— The case of the convict constable, Drink- water, laying so cunning a plot t0 take the life of an innocent, but humble individual, at Campbell Town, is only one of the many evils attendant on employing such villains in the Police; and the   more I think of it, the more I pity poor young Mr. Bryan, who has been convictyed before a mili   tary Jury upon convict evidence, of exactly similar nature ; and many, many indeed, have doubtless been made to suffer the severe penalty of the law when they have been innocent, by such miscreants as Drinkwater. It may not be gcnerally known, that a like attempt was made upon the life and character of a highly respectable and elderly Gentleman in the same District as that in which Mr. Bryan resided ; and it is said, that had this Gentleman been relatedton Mr. William Bryan,   he would have had to run the gauntlet as well as Mr. Robert Bryan.   It is much t0 be deplored, that Gove...
