Essayist. PUBLIC SCHOOLS OF PARIS. [Newspaper Article] — The Wyalong Star and Temora and Barmedman Advertiser — 20 July 1894

Essayist. PUBLIC SCHOOLS OF PABIS. Since 1880 great changes have been made in the Paris public schools, which are not entirely free schools, however. A corres pondent of the Boston Transcript thus des cribes one of the newer eohool buildings which are large, light aud airy : The tables and benches are made five different sizes, | with only two children sitting together. But there are other things which more surprise the foreigner. He . can understand the covered yard for exercise in rainy weather, which is frequent here in addition to the large, open playground. But at first he is puzzled Dy the kitchen, the dining-room, the shop for eatables and the work -rooms. It mixes up his idea of a public day school with that of an orphans' home. To tell the truth, tbe great Socialistic city treats its children almost like orphans, for whom everything must be done freely. The parents are sup posed to contribute according to their ability, but tbe sum asked is small and easily dis pensed with....

MINING. [Newspaper Article] — The Wyalong Star and Temora and Barmedman Advertiser — 20 July 1894

MNMINC. Miking matters have been almost at a standstill siuce our last, owing to the fact that the Warden had granted a Week's suspension of the labor condi tions, and many miners had fione away to the electorates iu which they wished to vole. The wet weather and the local excitement over the elections has also teiKK'U. to prevent w ork, and we think tliat since, operations on Ihe field irot faiily started, there has not been any week during which so little milling has been doiie. Hawkins and parly, who have been sinking a new cliaft o-i their claim near Mr. Keay's chemist sluip, ha ye struck a good sized Veet at 70ft., but the stone, though having a good general appear ance, does no.- curry much gold. Pos sibly. when a greater depth has been attained the result will Le more mtis I'uctory. According to the trend of the stone on the xhait, it would appear to lie :i continuation of one of the Currajoug reel's. A DISPARAGER OF MEN. [Newspaper Article] — The Wyalong Star and Temora and Barmedman Advertiser — 20 July 1894

A DISPARAGER OF MEN. From the modern girl's point of view, the man of the moment is not much aocount. The instinct of natural selection . whioh in clined her first of all to set him aside, for his flabbiness, is strengthened now by her know ledge of his character. She knows hi™ much better than her parents do, and in pro- - portion as she knows him she ^ finds less noouu W U1U*. , amw guw uiouuoq with each other and with the younger mar ried women, and out of their disoussions is arising a strong distaste for him ' I'm not going to marry a man I can't respect.* ' I shan't marry unless I find a man of honor with no honid past,' and ' Don't offer me the mutilated remains of a man,' coupled with ] the names of Tom Jones and Roderick Ran dom, are the commonest expressions of it. And it is in Tain- for the man of the moment when he spanies to hope to conceal the con sequences of the past from his wife by as suming a highly refined objeofion to ' allow ing ' her to read, any book that wou...

THE ORIGINAL AND ONLY GENUINE TODDY. [Newspaper Article] — The Wyalong Star and Temora and Barmedman Advertiser — 20 July 1894

THE OB1GINAL AND ONLY GENUINE TODDY. By a singular provision of nature — very obnoxious, no doubt, to Sir Wilfrid Lawson, but dear to the souls of unregenerate human ity — whatever produces sugar for one's toddy produces also on ihe same stem the toddy to put it in. Thus the self -same cane supplied Mr. Stiggins with his famous pineapple rum aud w ith the four large lumps which he employed fn fiOPMtAn if. Thus, too, John Barleycorn, when 'for England's good he yields his blood' iix the form of bitter brer, passes first through the sweet stage of jnalt, in whioh oonditiou he cap easily be-opnverted into the substance taini as y altoeeor yalt-sapar. - Itis thaj»«e with pabn-j'riioe. '?-55han simply boiled down it produces pslm-sugar, -but. whim allowed to ferment it turns into an excellent substitute for Bass's pale ale, called palm wine or toddy. This is, indeed, the original and only genuine toddy, all others being spurious imitations. — Cornhill.
