The Science of Ringbarking. [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 7 September 1900

Tha Science of Riiigbarkins. (1*V.A. LOCKIIART.) The dictiiiu that ' he w a public bene factor who makes two blades of grass grow where one grew before ' is too well acknowledged tu require any advocacy, ?whilst every pastoraliHt will know that whilst benefiting the estate in that way lie is also increasing his own source of revenue. There are many means T-y which the desired second blade may be obtained. Irrigation, as the principal, has been most exhaustively treated of in the press by abler bauds than mine. Most people are alive to the advantage.*, of artificial watering, but they are unable to apply it as a means, either from want of watei-'- difficulties in the contour of their lands, or want of funds ; but destruction of those great enemies to pasture, the large oucalyptus family of trees, as another means, is possible to ail, and is practiced by our pastoralists to a great extent, but in many cases, in an extravagant, waste ?f'ful, and comparatively useless manner, ,'. ..ifi ...

Dressing Wheat for Smut. [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 7 September 1900

Dressing Wheat for Smut. Mr. J. S. Mortimer, of*;Llenwellyn, Kantanga, during 20 years of wheat growing, has never been troubled with smut, and his experience, says a corres pondent of the 'Leader,'(N.Z.)may prove valuable to other farmers. In England, Mr. Mortimer says, the usual method is to spread the wheat * on the barn floor and'sprinkle it with a hot water^ solution of bluestone. Only in rare instances 'barn floors have been available here, and, . consequently, Mr. Mortimer proposes the following plan : — He has a trough1 made out of a hollow log, about G or 8 feet long, sufficiently deep to hold two bags ofseed. One bag only is put in, thus leaving ample room to well turn the ?wheat. Say, 12 bags ofseed are to be pickled. He puts 4lb of {bluestone in an earthern jar, then takes an earthemware pint mug, and pours 12 niugfuls of^ boil ing Water on the bluestone, adding a handful of salt to assist the bluestone to dissolve. Then he takes a pick-handle, or something similar,* and...

In-foal [?]ares. [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 7 September 1900

fft-l oaf Mares. In the case of agricultural in-foal Jnares regular farm wort, provided it: is Hot severe, is far better tlistii idleness. Agricultural mares, whilst in foal, may, in fret;, with groat advantage to their jhea'th, be worked daily on the land till they are close upon foaling- Light cart ing Work, where the roads are good, will not hurt them. Ploughing free* working land and harrowing is the most suitable employment for in-foal farm mares Re gularity in feeding is of great importance. It is equally important that the food shall he good of its kind, and sufficient to keep the mare in good firm condition. Idleness and fat, the Arab says truly, are exceedingly hurtful to breeding Jnares. 'Well saved oaten hay, free from «Eust, good home grown oats, and .bran cannot be surpassed as food for -working Mares and horses. Carrots are an ex cellent food, and may for a change take the place of bran.

THE CANOWINDRA TEMPORARY COMMON. (To the Editor.) [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 7 September 1900

THE CANOWINDEA TEMPORAEY COMMON. (To the Editor.) Siu, — The residents of Canowindra are indeed fortunate that such a splendid site was chosen and dedicated as a common but they cannot be complimen ted hi Jthe manner they are, and have been for some time, grazing their stock. A number of the Commoners, who should graze their stock on the Common, instead, craze them, on the Travelling Stock Eeseryes, West and South of the Com mon, thereby decreasing the Eeveuue of the Common to such an extent that the Trustees find great difficulty in retaining the services of a herdsman. Many re sideats of Canowindra feel that it Tvould be for the public good if t]ie Canowin dra Temporary Common site was revoked and tlve area measured into areas for Homestead Sites. This would be better than as at present. To prevent this eome great alteration rni+st be made shortly, sucTi as placing air the reserves contigu ous to Canowindra under some control £ixch as the Trustees of the Common, or someone avIio w...
