MR. GROOM AND THE LUTHERAN MISSION. TO THE EDITOR OF THE BRISBANE COURIER. [Newspaper Article] — The Brisbane Courier — 21 May 1864

MR. GROOM AND LUTHERAN   MISSION. TO TIIE EDITOR OF THE BRISBANE COURIER. SIR,-Allow me through the medium of the Courier to correct Mr. Groom's well meant, but incorrect statement, made in the Legislative Assembly on last Tuesday, with regard to the German Lutheran Mission at Toowoomba, and the Revds. Messrs. Angar and Schirmeister. I am able to prove by a letter from the Rev. Dr. Prochnow, the President of the Evangelical Lutheran Missionary Society of Berlin, that Mr. Angar was sent to Queensland, not on the application of the Lutherans of Toowoomba, to the head of the Lutheran Church at Ham- burgh, but on the application of the Rev. F. Schirmeister, to the Berlin Missionary Society. Mr. Groom has been misinformed ; Mr. Angar is not connected with any head of the Lutheran Church at Hamburgh, or any other Missionary Society in Germany, but that of the Berlin Missionary Society only. It is also certain that the Lutheran Church at Toowoomba was built for, and through th...

PER FAVOR OF THE BRISBANE COURIER. To the Honorable the Colonial Secretary. [Newspaper Article] — The Brisbane Courier — 21 May 1864

(PER FAVOR OF THE BRISBANE COURIER.) To the Honorable the Colonial Secretary. SIR,-Permit me to call your attention thus publicly to the gross misstatements of the honorable member for Toowoomba, Mr. Groom, in the Legislative Assembly of the 17th instant, as reported in the Brisbane Courier of the 18th instant, in reference to Mr. Angar, formerly Deacon of the German Lutheran Church of that place, and to state facts, for the truth of which I can vouch and will be held responsible. Through the sole instrumentality and energy of the Rev. F. Schirmeister, German Lutheran Minister in Brisbane, the church in Toowoomba was organised, land procured from the Govern- ment of New South Wales, and a church and parsonage built and regularly visited by him. Finding his strength not equal to that large parish, including German Station, Brisbane, Ipswich, and Toowoomba, he requested me to take charge of the church at Toowoomba, with an occasional visit to Ipswich, but my circum- stances not permit...

PARLIAMENTARY PERISCOPE. Pr[?]sens, absens ut sies. THE RAILWAY GALOP. [Newspaper Article] — The Brisbane Courier — 23 May 1864

PARLIAMENTARY PERISCOPE. By SILVERPEN Præsens, absens ut sies. THE RAILWAY GALOP. IT was a new sensation for one who has dwelt long in Queensland to look upon the Legislative Assembly last Tuesday. There was unwanted bustle about the old familiar place. A full house - a very unusual occurrence even with our limited number of six and twenty honorable members - and every available inch of space reserved for strangers occupied by eager spectators and attentive auditors. Ere the conventional half hour's grace before meet- ing had elapsed, the ministers' corner presented quite a formidable array of offi- cials, and the appearance amongst them of the professional head of the rail- way department informcd those who, like the burly Teuton who keeps a representative for Warwick without a seat, turn their backs on the papers, that an express train debate was to be started. Mr. Speaker was in the chair at a quarter past three, and honorable members, without re- quiring to be hunted up by the S...

Wljt tfmtvinv PUBLISH ED DAfLY. 3I0XVA1', 3IAT 23, 1SG1. THE' panic which luis recently -taken plneo in tlio flour market of Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide, is ono of Hiebest proofs which could be brought beforo the people of this colony uf the advisability of directing llieir attention to the cultivation ol' wheat. Whilst large sums of money are being expended in testing the suita- bility ol' the soil for the growth of sugar mill colton, there ¡san indisposition evinced on the part ol'-the agriculturists in Queens- land to compete with neighboring colonies as regards the supply ol' grain. Hence it , is that " any , rise which, through the speculations o'f South Australian growers, is caused in the markets of Hie neighboring colonies so seriously affects us. According to the returns niailo by Jír. BOOTHBY:, of South Australia, it would "appear that the quantity of wheat grown in that colony has been increasing annually, and that on that colony, which has ulwajs been tho ' emporium f...
