Our English letter. London, April 13th. Tiie Queen is in tho. Isle of Wight, but before this reaches Grenfell, the Court will have removed to Balmoral. Her Majesty will, on her way to Scotland, open the new Town Hall of Manchester The Prince and Princess of Wales, and all their household, have been re-vaccinated. His Highness has been sutiering irom an absence attributed to the effects of an injury received while hunt ing. The Prince and Princess will shortly take a yachting trip in the Mediterranean ; it is expected they will visit the King of Greece. It -is believed that a dukedom will be shortly conferred upon Prince Leopold ; people are hoping that he will be called Duke of Sussex. The Duke of Cambridge is expected shortly to send in his resignation as Commander-in-Chief. An Arctic medal has been struck, bearing the Queen's head on one side and the Alert on the other. Sin, — If a sojourn of thirty-eight years consti tutes Colonial Experience it should bo mine, I arrived in New South Wales when it was a Crown Colony, Sir George Gipps was the Governor, and Sir Edward Deas Thomson Colonial Secre tary. At that timo Crown Land was sold in blocks of 640 acres at five shillings per acre. Sales were uniformly by auction. I scarcely set foot on Australian soil when the price of land rose twelve shillings, and within a year to twenty shillings an ncro, without diminishing the area. We have received from the Government Printer & comprehensive, well-arranged, and carefully-compiled Annual Report of the Department of Mines for the year 1876, pre pared by Mr. Lucas, and Mr. Wood, tho Under Secretary. It consists of 184 pages of closely-printed matter, and contains a store of useful information, valuable to the public in general, but especially so to our mining population. We cull the following for the benefit of our readers. During the past year, 410 applica tions were received to lease, in the aggregate, 13,676 acres of mineral land, and 202 appli cations were received to lease, in the aggre gate, 920 acres of auriferous land. Valuable work has been done in tho collec tion and exhibition of minerals. The exhibits sent to the Queensland and Sydney Exhibitions have received high commenda tion, and have done much good in spreading information as to our mineral resources. Latest War lews. [PBOM THE DEEALD'S THLBQBAMS] London, May 31. Ihere are vague rumours of peace negotiations through German mediation, The army in Alsace-Lorraine has been rein forced. Immense armaments aro being made in the interior of Russia, and it is asserted that 1,000,000 men will be in arms in that country this month. London, June 2. Circassians in the Russian service have been recalled from the Danube, owing to disaffection. The recapture of Ardalian by the Turks has been officially confirmed. The Hon. R. Bourke, Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs, in reply to a question put to him in the House of Commons, said there was no 'reason to suppose that Russia imagines a peace settlement possible unless satisfying Europe. He had no knowledge of any Russian proposal to localise the war. At a demonstration of Liberals, held in Birmingham, Mr. Gladstone challenged the Government to test the opinion of the country on the obligations of tho Government by a dis solution.

' Mrs. Olson 'deposed : Knaw the prisoner before the Court; I did not send her to Tong Choug's store for the biscuits ; she was not in my service, she was formerly, but left on the 17th April ; had' not authorized prisoner to get any biscuits since she left my service ; if prisoner stated that I sent hor for biscuits, she said what was not true ; the girl was in my service from the 20th March to the 17th April last. . «J.
